Punjab Battling Cancer: Central Government’s relief and state government’s failure

Punjab government has to rise above politics and treat healthcare as a fundamental right. The central government has shown clear direction and commitment. Now it is the responsibility of the state government to implement these initiatives sincerely. If this does not happen, Punjab’s health crisis will deepen further and the state will continue to depend heavily on the centre

Health is the foundation of any nation’s social and economic strength. When a government gives priority to health in its budget, it shows concern not only for the present but also for future generations. In this year’s Union Budget, the announcements related to the health sector clearly reflect such long-term vision. The increased allocation for health, efforts to make life-saving medicines more affordable and special attention to serious diseases show that the BJP-led central government considers health a key pillar of development.

This budget has been presented at a time when India is facing a growing challenge of non-communicable diseases like cancer. Some northern states, especially Punjab, are deeply affected by this crisis. In such a situation, the central government’s decision to strengthen health infrastructure and make cancer treatment more affordable is not only a policy decision but also a humanitarian step. The Union Budget makes it clear that the BJP government views healthcare not just as a medical issue, but as a matter of social justice.

One of the most important features of this budget is its strong focus on serious and expensive diseases like cancer. The decision to reduce customs duty on several essential cancer medicines is expected to bring down their prices. In a country like India, where cancer treatment often becomes financially unbearable for ordinary families, this step is extremely significant. Relief on medicines for rare diseases has also been announced, which will help patients from low-income backgrounds.

By reducing the cost of life-saving drugs, the BJP government has shown that patients are at the center of its policymaking. Cancer treatment in India is still very costly and often pushes families into debt. Lowering the price of medicines is not just a financial reform; it is a compassionate step towards easing the burden of suffering families.

At the same time, the push to strengthen the biopharma sector shows the central government’s commitment to reducing import dependency and making India self-reliant in medical production. If cancer and other critical medicines are produced in large quantities within the country, treatment will become more affordable. It will also promote research, employment and technological growth. This long-term vision reflects the BJP government’s larger goal of building a strong and self-reliant India.

The announcement to strengthen healthcare services at the district level is equally important. Expanding emergency services, trauma caren and modern diagnostic facilities can save countless lives, especially in rural and semi-urban areas. The central government is clearly sending a message that quality healthcare should not remain limited to big cities but must reach every citizen.

The political reality of Punjab

When we compare this national vision with the situation in Punjab, the picture becomes worrying. Punjab has been struggling with a serious cancer problem for many years, particularly in the Malwa region, where cancer cases have reached alarming levels. Despite this, the state has not developed enough government cancer hospitals or expanded modern treatment facilities. As a result, patients are forced to travel to Delhi, Chandigarh or other states for proper treatment.

The Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab had promised revolutionary changes in the health sector before coming to power. However, the reality tells a different story. While claims have been made about increasing primary health centers, there has been a clear lack of focus on advanced and specialized treatment facilities. For a complex disease like cancer, the state needs strong policy decisions and major investment, which are visibly missing.

It is unfortunate that in a state where cancer cases are continuously rising, the government’s focus appears limited to advertisement-driven schemes and basic services. Serious healthcare challenges require more than political branding. Patients need modern machines, trained specialists, radiotherapy and chemotherapy facilities—yet these remain limited in Punjab.

In this context, it would not be wrong to say that Punjab’s healthcare system is heavily dependent on central government support. Schemes like Ayushman Bharat, treatment in central institutions and financial relief announced in the Union Budget are providing major support to patients in Punjab. Without the initiatives of the BJP-led central government, access to treatment would have been even more difficult for thousands of families.

This dependence itself exposes the shortcomings of the state government. Healthcare is a shared responsibility between the center and the states. But when a state government fails to fulfill its role, ordinary citizens suffer the most. The Punjab government must understand that merely benefiting from central schemes is not enough. It must build strong healthcare infrastructure at the state level.

The investments and policy decisions made by the BJP government offer Punjab a valuable opportunity. However, this opportunity can only be used effectively if the state government acts with seriousness and responsibility. Special cancer hospitals, research centers and trained medical staff are urgently needed in the state. Simply announcing free services or opening small clinics is not enough for patients battling life-threatening diseases.

Today, Punjab’s government has to rise above politics and treat healthcare as a fundamental right. The central government has shown clear direction and commitment. Now it is the responsibility of the state government to implement these initiatives sincerely. If this does not happen, Punjab’s health crisis will deepen further and the state will continue to depend heavily on the center.

The priority given to healthcare in the Union Budget is commendable and reflects the BJP government’s concern for the lives and well-being of India’s citizens. However, the lack of vision and decisive action by the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab is limiting the impact of these efforts. Until the state government takes strong and practical steps, real relief in the healthcare sector will remain a distant goal for the people of Punjab.
