Firefighting operations to contain the massive forest fire that broke out on February 13, 2026  in Walong, Anjaw district, are continuing for the fifth consecutive day with sustained intensity and coordination, said Lt Col. Mahendra Rawat, Defence Spokesperson in Guwahati.

Troops of the Indian Army (Spear Corps), in close coordination with the Indian Air Force and the local civil administration, remain fully committed to dousing residual flames, preventing flare-ups, and securing affected areas.

Over the past five days, relentless efforts have been undertaken through the synergised deployment of manpower, specialised firefighting equipment, heavy machinery, and helicopters providing aerial reconnaissance and water-dropping support. Operations are being carried out round-the-clock under challenging terrain and weather conditions to ensure complete extinguishing of the fire.

GOC 2 Mountain Division visited the affected area to review the ongoing firefighting efforts and commended troops for their dedication and response. Significant progress has been achieved in containing the blaze, and continuous monitoring is underway to prevent re-ignition. The coordinated response reflects the steadfast resolve of the Armed Forces and civil authorities to safeguard lives, protect property, and support the local community during this crisis.

Local MLA and Minister Dasanglu Pul expressed concern over the scale of the blaze and its impact on the region. She called on residents and travellers to exercise extreme caution and strictly follow safety advisories issued by authorities.

Minister and local MLA Dasanglu Pul voiced deep alarm at the massive wildfire’s devastation and its widespread effects on the area. She implored residents and travellers to stay highly vigilant and adhere closely to all official safety guidelines. Prioritising community safety above all, Pul warned against any careless behaviour that might endanger lives, assets, or the fragile local ecosystem.

Indian Army facilitates safe passage of  civilians

As part of humanitarian assistance, the Red Shield Division of the Indian Army facilitated the safe movement of 83 civilians from Leimakhong Police Station to Sapermeina in Manipur on February 15. The group comprised 53 students affected by their board exams, 12 civilians requiring medical care and 18 civilians seeking employment avenues.

The army convoy escorting the civilians encountered  three blockades en route, which were successfully crossed  by calm yet firm negotiations  with community leaders. The task was executed with meticulous planning, ensuring smooth and incident-free passage through sensitive areas.

The successful conduct of this task highlights the Indian Army’s steadfast commitment to humanitarian values, civilian protection and conflict mitigation, reinforcing its role as a pillar of stability and reassurance for the local population during phases of unrest, a statement by  Defence PRO Guwahati reads.
