Tumbler Ridge: A gunwoman killed ten people, including herself, in a shooting at a secondary school and a nearby residence on February 10 afternoon, in what is being described as one of the deadliest mass shootings in Canadian history, according to reports. The attack began at around 1:20 pm local time at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. The shooter entered the school and opened fire on teachers and students. Police who rushed to the scene discovered six bodies inside the building. A subsequent search of a nearby house revealed two more victims. Another person later died while being transported to the hospital, bringing the total death toll to ten.

Authorities confirmed that the suspect was a woman. Witnesses said the shooter had brown hair and was wearing a long gown. She was found dead inside the school. Police are investigating whether she took her own life or was fatally shot by responding officers. No additional details about the suspect have been released so far. For this small town of approximately 2,400 residents, the tragedy has been overwhelming. Following the shooting, Tumbler Ridge was placed under complete lockdown for several hours. Police instructed residents to remain inside their homes, while schools and government offices were shut down. Several injured victims were airlifted to hospitals in larger cities for urgent medical care.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have assumed full control of the investigation. Officials said it remains unclear why the woman carried out such a brutal attack or whether she had any connection to the school. Questions are also being raised about security, especially given Canada’s relatively strict gun laws. The government has deployed emergency counselling teams to provide psychological support to grieving families, students and witnesses. An emergency alert issued shortly after the incident provided key details about the attacker, describing the suspect as “a female with brown hair wearing a gown.” Superintendent Ken Floyd, North District Commander, said the individual found dead inside the school matched that description. Authorities have not yet established a motive or confirmed the suspect’s background.

The town was kept under lockdown for several hours amid fears that there could be additional attackers. Police safely evacuated around 100 students and staff from the school. The alert was lifted at approximately 5:45 pm once authorities confirmed there was no ongoing threat. The shooting has deeply shaken the community and drawn condolences from political leaders. “My prayers go out to the people of Tumbler Ridge, this is an unspeakable tragedy,” said Larry Neufeld, Member of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. British Columbia Solicitor General Nina Krieger described the incident as “extremely serious” and pledged full support for the affected families.

Officials confirmed that both schools in Tumbler Ridge will remain closed for the rest of the week. Crisis response teams are continuing to provide counselling and mental health assistance to students, staff and residents struggling to cope with the trauma. Police have not released the names of the victims, and the motive behind the shooting remains unknown. The RCMP said further information will be shared once autopsy reports are completed and evidence collection is finished. The mass shooting inside a small-town school has reignited national debate over gun safety and public security in Canada. As investigators work to piece together what happened, a grieving community is left searching for answers in the aftermath of an unimaginable tragedy.

As investigators continue their work, messages of condolence have poured in from around the world. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, stating in a social media post: “Deeply shocked by the horrendous shooting in Canada. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones and wish a speedy recovery to the injured. India stands in solidarity with the people of Canada in this moment of profound grief.”
