A Hindu sant, Swami Suryananda Maharaj, was seriously injured during an incident at a religious gathering in the Bhagabanpur area of West Bengal’s Purba Medinipur district on Sunday. The incident occurred during a Hindu Sammelan, triggering sharp political reactions and allegations of targeted violence.
According to local accounts, the incident took place during a Hindu Sammelan organised in Bhagabanpur, where religious leaders and devotees had gathered peacefully. Tensions reportedly escalated at the venue, following which Swami Suryananda Maharaj sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a hospital for medical treatment.
Hospital sources confirmed that Swami ji was admitted with multiple injuries and is currently under medical observation. His condition has been described as serious, though stable, by those who visited him.
As of the time of filing this report, police have not released an official version detailing how the violence unfolded, nor have they confirmed whether any arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
The West Bengal Police and the state administration have so far remained silent on the circumstances leading to the violence at the religious gathering. It is also unclear whether an FIR has been registered or whether the incident is being treated as a case of assault, rioting, or attempted murder.
Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, visited the hospital to meet Swami Suryananda Maharaj and later shared a detailed account of the incident through a strongly-worded social media post.
Adhikari claimed that the monk was attacked during the Sammelan for raising the chant of ‘Jai Shri Ram’, which he described as an expression of Hindu religious identity. According to him, the saint narrated the sequence of events from his hospital bed.
“They pounced on him like wild animals,” Adhikari alleged, claiming that the attackers attempted to kill the monk by putting a noose around his neck and repeatedly assaulting him with punches, kicks, and blows to the chest.
The BJP leader further alleged that the assailants were linked to the ruling Trinamool Congress and included individuals he referred to as “jihadis”. He described the attack as a “deliberate and cold-blooded attempt” rather than a spontaneous clash.
Escalating his attack on the Mamata Banerjee-led government, Adhikari termed the incident “state-sponsored terror”, accusing the administration of systematically enabling violence against Hindus in West Bengal.
“This is not mere lawlessness. This is organised terror against anyone who dares to assert Hindu pride,” he said, alleging that attacks on Hindu saints, temple vandalism, and intimidation of devotees have become routine under the current regime.
He also accused the state police of acting as “mute spectators” and claimed that such incidents follow a familiar pattern of administrative inaction and political protection for perpetrators.
Using the incident to issue a broader appeal, Adhikari called for unity among Hindus across caste and regional lines, stating that the attack on Swami Suryananda Maharaj was an assault on Hindu faith and identity as a whole.
“How long will Hindus keep suffering in silence?” he asked, framing the incident as a larger civilisational issue rather than an isolated act of violence.
Meanwhile, the condition of Swami Suryananda Maharaj continues to be closely monitored, even as demands for strict action against those responsible grow louder.
