2025 Gold Discoveries: How Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha & Karnataka could transform nation’s gold reserves

2025 has been a landmark year for India’s gold sector, with major discoveries across Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and Karnataka promising to reshape the country’s import-dependent landscape. These finds could significantly boost domestic reserves, drive economic growth, and position India as a rising player in the global gold market

India, the world’s second-largest consumer of gold, has long struggled with heavy import dependence, bringing in over 700–800 tonnes annually, while domestic production remains modest at just 1.5–2 tonnes. However, 2025 has ushered in a potentially transformative phase for the sector, with at least four major gold discoveries across key states, confirmed by government geological surveys and authoritative research reports.

These discoveries, often referred to in mining circles as “jackpots,” could collectively add thousands of kilograms to India’s reserves, helping reduce import bills and driving economic growth through exports and employment generation. Based exclusively on credible sources, including the Geological Survey of India (GSI), State Departments of Mines and Geology, and analyses by SBI Research, here is a detailed overview of each discovery, along with available timelines.

Andhra Pradesh: Jonnagiri’s Private Mining Milestone in September 2025

In September 2025, Andhra Pradesh achieved a historic milestone with the Jonnagiri Gold Project in Kurnool district. Developed by Hyderabad-based Padmavathi Minerals, it marks India’s first large-scale private gold mine, with confirmed reserves capable of producing 750 kilograms annually, around 40 per cent of the country’s current output. Initial drilling conducted between 2023 and 2024 was upgraded in September 2025 after over 100,000 meters of boreholes identified 2.5 million tonnes of ore at grades of 1.5–2 grams per tonne, and commercial mining permits were granted in October. Valued at Rs 500–600 crore in initial output, the project is expected to generate more than 1,000 jobs while introducing eco-friendly extraction technologies. Production could expand to 1,000 kilograms annually by 2028, reinforcing Andhra Pradesh’s ambitions as a major mining hub. Addressing water scarcity in Kurnool, the project includes mandatory rainwater harvesting to ensure sustainable operations. This private-sector breakthrough represents a shift from public sector dominance, boosting investor confidence and setting a strong precedent for future private gold ventures in India..

Madhya Pradesh: Jabalpur’s “lakhs of tonnes” breakthrough in mid-2025

In August 2025, Central India witnessed a major gold breakthrough when GSI geologists uncovered substantial reserves in Jabalpur district, Madhya Pradesh. Located within the Mahakoshal belt, the site revealed gold ore estimated in the “lakhs of tonnes” range, potentially exceeding 100,000 tonnes, with grades of 2–5 grams per tonne, making it suitable for large-scale open-pit mining. Exploratory drilling began in April 2025 following airborne surveys, and high-grade ore was confirmed in August, prompting the Madhya Pradesh Mineral Resources Department to issue a prospecting license in September, fast-tracking production plans for 2027. Economically, the deposits, closely linked with copper, could yield 5–10 tonnes annually, boosting the state’s mining GDP contribution. This aligns with India’s Critical Minerals Mission and may support value-added exports such as gold–copper alloys. Analysts also note that the discovery has the potential to significantly enhance domestic refining capacity and reduce import costs by Rs 5,000–7,000 crore annually once fully operational. However, the site’s proximity to the Narmada River requires comprehensive environmental impact assessments, which could delay full-scale excavation.

Odisha: A multi-district gold trove unearthed in early 2025

Odisha emerged as the first major gold hotspot of 2025, with Geological Survey of India (GSI) explorations confirming substantial deposits across three mineral-rich districts, Deogarh, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj. A preliminary GSI report released in March 2025, later corroborated by SBI Research in November, estimates around 1,685 kilograms of gold ore. This conservative figure is based on initial sampling, with potential for significantly higher yields as deeper drilling progresses. Initial surveys began in late 2024, with confirmatory results announced in March 2025, and geophysical mapping and further validation scheduled to conclude by July 2025, paving the way for Odisha’s first gold block auction later this year. Located along the Singhbhum shear zone extension, these deposits could produce 10–20 tonnes annually once fully operational, helping reduce India’s current 90 per cent reliance on gold imports. SBI Research also highlights the potential for significant consolidation in the sector, similar to the 2016 telecom industry shake-up. While environmental clearances are still pending, Odisha’s proactive mining policies may expedite approvals. This discovery represents a strategic shift for Odisha, traditionally an iron ore powerhouse, toward precious metals, with early valuations suggesting the ore could be worth over Rs 1,200 crore at current prices (~Rs 72,000 per 10 grams).

Karnataka: Koppal and Raichur’s high-grade surprise in December 2025

Karnataka closed 2025 with a significant high-grade gold discovery in the Amrapur block of Koppal district, alongside lithium traces in Raichur’s Amareshwara block. Gold grades range between 12–14 grams per tonne, with surface samples suggesting daily yields of 25–30 kg from a single mine, valued at Rs 18–22 crore. Initial gold traces were first identified in 2020, with lithium noted in 2023, and extensive surveys conducted in 2025 over more than 16,000 hectares confirmed the deposits’ viability by December. Drilling has not yet commenced due to pending forest clearances. Under Karnataka’s “Mission Gold” initiative, these discoveries could unlock over Rs 10,000 crore in value and generate approximately 5,000 jobs, potentially setting benchmarks comparable to global gold operations if approvals are secured. However, many deposits lie within protected reserve forests, requiring approvals under the Forest Conservation Act, which could take two to three years.

The four major discoveries of 2025, spanning Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka, represent a rare convergence that could add 20–30 tonnes to India’s proven gold reserves, currently estimated at around 500 tonnes. SBI Research projects this could reduce gold imports by 15–20 per cent by 2030, saving $2–3 billion annually amid high global prices.

As India prepares for upcoming gold auctions and increased FDI inflows, these discoveries position the country not only as a leading consumer but as an emerging player in the global gold supply chain. With the Geological Survey of India’s 2026 exploration budget increased by 25 per cent, further high-potential finds are likely, particularly in Odisha and Karnataka.
