BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya has slammed the incident as a symbol of “administrative collapse” under the Mamata Banerjee government, accusing it of dragging Bengal’s name into international disrepute. The Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), West Bengal, has gone a step further, calling the episode a “Messi Scam” and launching street protests demanding accountability and resignations.

Kolkata is not just another city on the football map it is a city where the sport is an emotion, a tradition passed down generations. Against this backdrop, the announcement of Lionel Messi’s programme was sold as a historic moment. Those named include close relatives of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, associates of Abhishek Banerjee, senior minister Aroop Biswas, and members of the Biswas family. The optics, critics argue, were devastating: while thousands waited outside with tickets in hand, a select political circle enjoyed front-row privilege.
“This was not miscommunication; this was deliberate exclusion,” Amit Malviya alleged, calling it a betrayal of public trust and a mockery of Bengal’s football culture.
As the situation worsened, the scale of administrative failure became impossible to hide. There was poor coordination between organisers, security personnel, and stadium authorities. Clear instructions were missing. Entry gates were closed or rerouted without explanation. Fans were left standing for hours, uncertain whether the programme would even take place.
The ultimate humiliation came when Lionel Messi reportedly could not stay for the event due to the prevailing chaos and security concerns. For thousands who had gathered in hope, the news felt like a punch to the gut. Instead of celebration, frustration turned into rage.

In the aftermath, BJYM accused a TMC-sponsored event management agency of cheating football fans, alleging that false promises were made to sell expensive tickets without ensuring access or safety. Instead of a transparent inquiry, critics claim that an organiser is now being positioned as a convenient scapegoat, allowing political leadership to evade responsibility.
“Scams in Bengal now come wrapped in celebrity branding,” a BJYM leader remarked. “From recruitment frauds to this football farce, the pattern is the same no accountability at the top.”
Leaders have also questioned the political motivations behind the event, pointing to the controversial installation of a 70-foot statue of Lionel Messi prior to the programme. They allege that the international footballer was brought in primarily for political optics rather than sporting development or public engagement.
“What was the plan beyond photo opportunities?” asked a BJP spokesperson. “There was no respect for fans, no respect for the player, and no respect for public safety.”
