Bhattacharya, IAS (Retd.), a senior guest faculty member at the Institute of Public Enterprise (IPE), Shamirpet, Hyderabad, has been booked after a student accused him of making derogatory remarks against Hindu deities during a classroom session. The retired IAS officer, invited as part of the institute’s guest faculty, is now under police investigation after Shamirpet Police registered a criminal case based on the formal complaint.

According to police, the complaint was lodged by a second-year PGDM student of IPE College. In his written statement, he alleged that Bhattacharya, IAS (Retd.), who is invited periodically by the college management to teach Economics, delivered a lecture to the first-year PGDM students on December 8, 2025. During the session, the retired bureaucrat reportedly diverted from the academic content and made “objectionable, offensive, and derogatory remarks” relating to Hindu beliefs, rituals, and deities.

The complainant stated that he came to know of the matter after several students in the first-year batch expressed that they were disturbed and hurt by the comments. After being alerted, the student reviewed the video recording of the lecture and said that the remarks were unrelated to Macroeconomics, the subject of the lecture, and appeared to be intentionally provocative in nature.

In his complaint, he alleged that Bhattacharya questioned the logic and relevance of murti worship among Hindus and made disrespectful comments about Bhagwan Ganesha, Bhagwan Narasimha, and Bhagwan Hanuman, even referring to Hanuman in a belittling manner as a “monkey god”.

These remarks reportedly hurt the sentiments of Hindu students, causing anger, humiliation, and emotional distress among those who revere these deities.

The complainant further requested action not only against the retired IAS officer but also against the college management for failing to prevent such conduct in an academic environment and for allowing a faculty member to make religiously sensitive comments unrelated to the curriculum.

Based on the contents of the complaint, Shamirpet Police registered a case under Sections 196 and 299 read with 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertain to promoting enmity, deliberate insult to religious beliefs, and disturbing communal harmony.

Police officials confirmed that the FIR has been forwarded to the Commissioner of Police, Cyberabad, the DCP Medchal Zone, and the ACP Pet Basheerabad Sub-Division for information and further monitoring.
