HYDERBAD: Panic spread at Kothagudem Railway Station in Bhadradri Kothagudem district on December 3 after a small bomb exploded on the railway track, killing a stray dog on the spot. The incident created fear among passengers and prompted an immediate response from the police and railway authorities.

According to officials, unknown persons had placed a country-made bomb inside a black bag near the first platform of the station. The explosive was shaped like an onion and is suspected to be the type commonly used by hunters to trap or kill wild animals. Police believe the bomb may have been thrown away or discarded in a garbage dumping area close to the station.

A stray dog wandering near the track found the object and mistook it for food. The dog carried the explosive onto the railway track. When it tried to bite into it, the bomb exploded with a loud noise. The impact killed the dog instantly. Fortunately, no passengers or staff were near the blast site at that moment, otherwise a major accident could have occurred.

Passengers who were waiting at the station ran in fear after hearing the explosion. Some people initially thought it was a technical fault or an accident involving a train. However, railway staff quickly understood that it was a blast and informed the police.

Police teams reached the spot within minutes. They cordoned off the area and stopped the movement of trains as a precaution. The Bomb Squad and Dog Squad were also called in to check the entire station premises for any additional explosives. Security was tightened at nearby stations as well, and passengers were advised to remain alert.

District Superintendent of Police (SP) Rohit Raju confirmed that the incident happened under the limits of the Three Town Police Station. He explained that the bomb did not appear to be part of any major terror plot. Instead, early investigation suggests that it was a locally made explosive commonly used for hunting animals in forest areas. Someone had likely thrown it in the garbage area without realizing the danger it could create in a public place.

SP Raju said the dog accidentally triggered the explosion and died due to the impact. “The bomb seems to have been made for hunting wild animals. It was probably dumped near the station, and the dog carried it to the track. When it bit into it, the blast occurred,” he said.

Police are investigating to identify those who left the explosive near the railway station. Officers are examining CCTV footage, speaking to locals and checking recent activities around the nearby forest and railway station area.

The SP also appealed to the public not to spread rumours or share unverified messages on social media. He said false information could create unnecessary fear and confusion. He requested citizens to wait for official updates from the police as the investigation continues.

Railway officials said that train services were temporarily halted but resumed later after the area was declared safe. They assured passengers that safety checks would be increased across platforms and that strict action would be taken against anyone responsible for bringing dangerous materials into railway premises. The investigation is ongoing.
