Karnataka: Outrage erupts as GBA renames Kumaraswamy layout to Yarab Nagar, BJP slams ‘Appeasement Politics’

The Greater Bengaluru Authority's renaming of Kumaraswamy Layout to Yarab Nagar has sparked political uproar. BJP slammed the move as appeasement politics, questioning the government's motives and the residents' consent. The controversy highlights growing tensions over ward name changes amid GBA's administrative overhaul in the city.

The Siddaramaiah-led Congress government has once again landed at the centre of a fierce political storm, this time over the Greater Bengaluru Authority’s (GBA) controversial renaming of several BBMP wards most notably the change of Kumaraswamy Layout Ward to Yarab Nagar Ward. What should have been an administrative exercise has now snowballed into a full-blown confrontation, with critics accusing the government of indulging in blatant appeasement politics and altering Bengaluru’s heritage without public consent.

Over the past six months, the GBA set up to replace the long-standing BBMP Council has been pushing through sweeping administrative changes, including delimitation, an increase in ward numbers, and the restructuring of jurisdictions. But the final notification issued on December 1 triggered widespread anger, as multiple wards saw abrupt, unexplained name changes.

The most explosive decision was the renaming of Kumaraswamy Layout Ward a well-established residential locality under the Padmanabhanagar Assembly constituency to Yarab Nagar Ward. This unilateral change, made without public consultation or demand from residents, has been sharply condemned by the BJP and JDS, who have accused the Congress government of systematically erasing culturally significant names. The BJP lashed out, saying the move reflects the government’s anti-Hindu mindset, adding, “If Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and DCMD.K. Shivakumar wish, they can rename their own houses as ‘Yarab Niwas’.

But public wards cannot be tampered with based on vote-bank politics. Restore the name Kumaraswamy Layout immediately.” The opposition further questioned if any resident groups had sought such a change. “Has even one local citizen given a representation asking for YarabNagar? This is political engineering, not administration,” BJP leaders stated. They warned the government against “forcibly altering Bengaluru’s cultural identity.” This is the second major controversy in just a month. Earlier, the renaming of Akash Nagar, widely believed to have been named after a political leader’s son, was rolled back after public backlash, only to be replaced again with the name Aero. City, raising allegations of continued arbitrariness.

Several other wards, including Indiranagar, New Thippasandra, Kalyana Nagar, T.C. Palya (renamed Anandpur), Medahalli, and others, have had their names and boundaries altered, leaving citizens confused and angry. Critics argue that the GBA, which was expected to strengthen Bengaluru’s governance, is instead functioning in an opaque manner, issuing notifications without debate, discussion or transparency. Civic groups say that a city of 1.4crore people cannot be run through unilateral diktats.
