Uttarakhand: Madrasa cum mosque built by Islamists on govt land demolished in Dehradun

The Uttarakhand government has intensified its anti-encroachment drive in the western Doon region, targeting illegal constructions on state-owned land along the Shakti Nagar border by Islamists. On November 23, authorities demolished around 60 structures as part of a broader operation to clear approximately 11 hectares of Energy Department land that had been occupied by 111 Islamists.

A large madrasa, which officials say was constructed illegally on government land, was also razed. The structure that was built by Islamists had previously been granted time for voluntary demolition after a committee’s request. However, officials noted that over the past two years, the madrasa had been expanded and was being converted into a mosque with tall minarets.

During the demolition, a Islamists gathered in protest and attempted to obstruct the operation, but police intervened to prevent disruptions.

This action follows a similar large-scale drive conducted two years ago, when the Dhami-led government cleared multiple illegal structures along both sides of the Shakti Canal from Dak Patthar to Dhakrani. The state later outlined plans to develop solar energy projects on this reclaimed land.

SDM Vinod Kumar confirmed that the latest encroachment removal drive is being carried out according to state government directives. He added that adequate notice and time had been provided to those occupying the land, and that the campaign would continue until all encroachments are cleared.
