New Delhi: The President of India, Droupadi Murmu on November 20 graced the ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas’ celebration at Ambikapur of Chhattisgarh’s Surguja district.
Speaking at the event organised to mark the ongoing celebrations of the 150th birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, the President stated that the contribution of tribal communities is a glorious chapter in the history of Bharat which is the mother of democracy.
She noted that the examples of the democracy can be seen in ancient republics as well as in numerous tribal traditions, such as the ‘Muria Darbar’ – a primitive people’s parliament in Bastar.
The President underlined that over past decade, national-level schemes have been developed and implemented for the development and welfare of the tribal communities.
“Last year, ‘Dharti Aba Janjati Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan’ was launched on Gandhi Jayanti. The benefits of that campaign will reach over 50 million tribal brothers and sisters across the country. In 2023, Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN Abhiyan) was launched for the social and economic development of 75 PVTG communities. All these schemes are testament to the priority the government gives to tribal communities,” she said.

She further underscored that the Government of India has launched the ‘Adi Karmayogi Abhiyan’ during the 150th birth anniversary year of Bhagwan Birsa Munda to give new energy to the development efforts for tribal communities.
She noted that a network of around 20 lakh volunteers is being created across the country under this Abhiyan. She expressed confidence that these volunteers will ensure the development of tribal communities by working at ground level.
The president expressed satisfaction over Maoists abandoning the path of violence and joining mainstream. She said that Naxalites across the country including in Chhattisgarh have been giving up the path of violence and joining the mainstream of development.
She further noted that with the deliberate and well-organised efforts of the Union and the state governments, the eradication of Left Wing Extremism will become possible in near future.
The president also expressed joy over participation of more than 165,000 people in the recently held ‘Bastar Olympics.’ She expressed confidence that by following the ideals of tribal icons, people of Chhattisgarh will make invaluable contributions to building a strong, self-reliant, and developed Bharat. She also expressed delight over the fortnight long celebration of Janjatiya Gaurav Divas in Chhattisgarh.
The President further remarked that women are the foundation of the society and when they progress, the society moves forward.
The President on the occasion also recalled her recent meeting with Indian Women’s cricket team. She praised the tribal women cricketer Kranti Gaud, stating that Gaud presented a revolutionary example of hard work and determination for the women across the country, especially for the daughters of the tribal communities.
Chhattisgarh Governor Ramen Deka and Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai were also present at the event organised to honour Dharti Aba Bhagwan Birsa Munda, a legendry freedom fighter from the tribal community who fought bravely with the British. His birth anniversary is now being observed as Janjatiya Gaurav Divas.
