A shocking incident of mob intimidation has rocked the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, raising serious concerns about campus safety, law enforcement, and administrative accountability. On the night of November 9, 2025, a female student was allegedly surrounded by a mob of around 50 Islamists after she objected to loud music being played beyond 10 PM a clear violation of campus and civic rules.
According to eyewitnesses and student accounts, the mob gathered near Hostel 10, where a wedding celebration involving certain staff members was underway. The student, exercising her right to peaceful complaint, was allegedly intimidated and shouted down by the crowd. When male students intervened to support her, they were reportedly physically assaulted and issued death threats, with witnesses quoting the chilling words, “जान से मार देंगे” (“We will kill you”).
The incident occurred around midnight near the Hostel 10 complex, a residential and academic hub within IIT Bombay’s sprawling campus. Multiple students reported that the noise from the ongoing wedding celebrations had persisted well past the institute’s permitted limit of 10 PM, prompting several residents including the female student to request that the volume be lowered.
Instead of compliance or dialogue, the response was aggressive and communalised. Within minutes, a mob reportedly numbering around 50 surrounded the complainant and began to shout threats, insults, and intimidatory slogans.
On the night of November 9, at approximately 11:00 PM, a student from Hostel 10 went to the lawn area where a Muslim wedding celebration was taking place on campus. She politely requested the organisers to switch off the music, explaining that she had an examination the next morning and that the loud noise was disturbing her studies and rest.
Shortly afterward, four to five students from her department, who were at Gulmohar for food, came to support her request. Instead of responding respectfully, a large group of approximately 50–60 individuals from the wedding gathering surrounded the students and confronted them aggressively. They started shouting and using abusive and threatening language — including statements like “Tu bahar nikal, tere ko jaan se maar denge” (or similar threatening words).
Female students were also subjected to sexist and inappropriate remarks targeting their clothing — for example, comments such as “Aise kapde pehen ke yahan kyun aayi ho?” (or similar remarks related to their attire).
The students felt terrified and unsafe due to the hostile behaviour and the large number of aggressors. The Associate Dean (SA) and the Mumbai Police arrived at the scene shortly after. Despite the presence of authorities, the students were hesitant to file a formal written complaint, fearing retaliation or possible harm from those involved.
What has deeply unsettled the IIT community is the absence of swift administrative or police action. Despite the seriousness of the allegations including death threats and physical assault there has been no official statement from IIT Bombay at the time of this report.
The student group “IIT B for Bharat”, which issued a public statement on X, has called for a fair, transparent, and impartial investigation. Their statement condemned the violence and administrative silence, urging both the IIT Bombay administration and the Mumbai Police to take immediate action against those responsible.

“We urge the IIT Bombay administration and Mumbai Police to conduct a fair, transparent, and impartial investigation to ensure accountability for all responsible parties,” the statement read. “Safety and justice cannot be selective. Intimidation and mob violence have no place in an academic institution.”
