Railways clears Rs 1,946 crore boost for south-central network doubling electrification projects

The Ministry of Railways has approved a major infrastructure upgrade for the South-Central Railway (SCR) network, sanctioning Rs 1,746 crore for the doubling of key routes and Rs 200 crore for electrification works. The move is expected to improve safety, reduce congestion, and enhance freight and passenger movement across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana

In a significant move to modernise the South-Central Railway (SCR) network, the Ministry of Railways has sanctioned projects worth over Rs 1,946 crore aimed at improving connectivity, speed, and operational efficiency in the region.

According to officials, the ministry has cleared Rs 1,746.20 crore for the doubling of the Motumarri-Vishnupuram railway line, along with an additional Rs 200 crore for the electrification of crucial stretches, including the Pagidipalli-Guntur and Motumarri-Vishnupuram sections.

The Motumarri-Vishnupuram line, which serves as a vital freight and passenger corridor linking Secunderabad and Vijayawada, is undergoing a major transformation. Work between Motumarri and Jaggayyapeta is already in progress and, once completed, will ease the load on the congested Vijayawada-Kazipet main line.

Officials noted that the doubling and electrification will significantly reduce travel time, improve punctuality, and enable the operation of more trains, particularly benefiting freight movement that carries large volumes of cement and industrial goods from southern Andhra Pradesh.

The project also includes track renewal, replacement of worn-out rails and sleepers, and the strengthening of bridges and culverts. With a 25 kV traction system being upgraded, two new sub-stations are planned to reinforce the power supply network, ensuring smoother electric train operations.

The Guntur-Pagidipalli line, which serves as a major passenger route, and the Motumarri-Vishnupuram section, a critical freight artery, will both benefit from this infrastructure revamp.

Railway authorities emphasised that Andhra Pradesh’s rail infrastructure remains a top national priority. Once completed, the doubling and electrification works are expected to ease congestion on the Vijayawada-Kazipet route, boost intercity travel between Guntur and Secunderabad, and enhance freight logistics efficiency.

Officials also pointed out that the upgraded corridors will strengthen future connectivity with Amaravati, the state’s new capital, as work continues on alternative routes while the dedicated Amaravati rail link is expected to take another five to eight years.
