Bhubaneswar: Odisha has taken a significant step towards becoming a hub for advanced electronics and semiconductor manufacturing with the laying of the foundation stone for the state’s first compound semiconductor project at Info Valley in Jatni, Bhubaneswar, on November 1.

Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, attended the ceremony virtually, while Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Odisha IT Minister Mukesh Mahaling were present at the project site.

The facility, to be developed by SiCSem Private Limited, marks a landmark investment in Odisha’s industrial and technological landscape. With an investment outlay of Rs 2,067 crore, the project is expected to create approximately 5,000 direct and indirect job opportunities, significantly boosting the state’s high-tech manufacturing sector.

In his address at the ceremony, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi referred to the project as a historic milestone for Odisha. “Today marks a proud moment for our state as we take a significant step towards becoming a hub for advanced electronics and semiconductor manufacturing. The Bhoomi Pujan of SiCSem Private Limited’s Compound Semiconductor Facility at Info Valley reflects our vision for Atmanirbhar Bharat and showcases Odisha’s progressive policies, world-class infrastructure, and growing innovation ecosystem,” the Chief Minister stated.

He further remarked that the semiconductor unit aligns with Odisha’s broader strategy to develop future-ready sectors, including electronics, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies. “Our government is committed to creating one of India’s most investment-friendly destinations by promoting innovation-driven industries and providing robust policy support for high-tech sectors,” he noted.

The upcoming compound semiconductor fabrication facility, approved by the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), will boast an annual production capacity of 60,000 wafers and a packaging capacity of 96 million units. The unit will manufacture critical components used in electric vehicles, defence systems, railways, and renewable energy technologies.

Additionally, a Rs 64 crore Research and Innovation Centre will be established at IIT Bhubaneswar to strengthen the state’s semiconductor ecosystem and advance research in Silicon Carbide (SiC) technology. This initiative is expected to enhance collaboration between academia and industry, fostering innovation and skill development in the semiconductor sector.

Highlighting the significance of the initiative, CM Majhi commented, “This project is a major achievement for Odisha. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is no longer lagging behind any country in technological advancement. We are building a strong, self-reliant, and technology-driven economy through progressive policies, modern infrastructure, and skill-based growth.”

He added, “With steadfast support from the Government of India and our industry partners, Odisha will continue to contribute to India’s eastern growth story — promoting innovation, employment, and prosperity for a Samruddha Odisha and a Viksit Bharat.”

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, addressing the event virtually, praised the Odisha Government’s efforts and the Centre’s collaboration in driving rapid development. “The double-engine government has made significant progress in Odisha across multiple sectors, including railways, highways, electronics, telecom, and semiconductors. A state-of-the-art semiconductor research lab will also be established at IIT Bhubaneswar,” he announced.

Currently, India relies heavily on countries such as China, Taiwan, South Korea, and Singapore for semiconductor components. The establishment of this facility in Bhubaneswar is expected to reduce import dependence, enhance domestic production capacity, and strengthen India’s semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem under the Make in India and Digital India missions.

Officials stated that the project will not only elevate Odisha’s technological capabilities but also contribute to India’s ambition of becoming a global semiconductor hub, promoting self-reliance and sustainable industrial growth.
