Visakhapatnam is poised to embark on a new phase in India’s digital evolution. Once celebrated for its tranquil coastline and industrial foundation, the city is now rising as the technological core of the ‘Viksit Bharat’ initiative. Tech behemoth Google has selected Visakhapatnam as the location for India’s inaugural Artificial Intelligence (AI) hub, signifying a monumental advancement in the nation’s pursuit of digital transformation and self-sufficiency.

India’s first AI Hub: A vision takes shape

With the guidance of the Andhra Pradesh government and the backing of the Union government, Google plans to construct a 1-gigawatt hyperscale data center in Visakhapatnam, with an anticipated investment of ₹87,520 crore. This facility will be Google’s largest outside the United States and the most extensive hyperscale data center in Asia.

The significant agreement was formalized in New Delhi on October 14, 2025, in the presence of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Union Ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw and Nirmala Sitharaman, State IT Minister Nara Lokesh, along with senior Google officials.

As stated by Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Visakhapatnam’s strategic coastal position and favorable climate are perfect for extensive data operations. Its access to subsea cable connectivity positions it as a natural hub for global digital communication. The center will operate on 80% clean energy, incorporating solar and hydro projects planned along the coastline.

Empowering a Digital Andhra, Strengthening a Digital India

This initiative aligns seamlessly with the ‘Digital Andhra’ and ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ missions, which emphasize innovation, sustainability and inclusive growth. The data center will enhance India’s capabilities in AI, cloud computing and data management, driving progress in education, healthcare, agriculture and governance.

The Andhra Pradesh government anticipates that the center will create 1.8 lakh direct and indirect jobs, positively impacting sectors like IT, networking, maintenance, hospitality, logistics and transportation. It is expected that around the AI hub, incubation centers, start-up parks and public–private partnerships will flourish, fostering home-grown innovation.

Driving economic growth and global leadership

Economists project that from 2028 to 2032, the initiative will add nearly ₹10,500 crore each year to Andhra Pradesh’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP). The transformation of Visakhapatnam will also stimulate growth in the telecom, power, real estate and infrastructure sectors, generating new revenue streams through SGST, property tax and electricity duties.

Industry experts are of the opinion that this investment will position Visakhapatnam as South India’s second-largest tech hub, after Bengaluru. Major IT companies such as TCS, Infosys, HCL and FinTech Valley have already set up operations in the city and the anticipated entry of Google is likely to draw even more international firms.

The Andhra Pradesh government forecasts that the center will yield 1.8 lakh direct and indirect jobs, benefiting industries such as IT, networking, maintenance, hospitality, logistics and transportation. It is anticipated that around the AI hub, incubation centers, start-up parks and public–private partnerships will prosper, promoting home-grown innovation.

Secure, sustainable and strategic

Beyond mere economic advancement, this project holds significant strategic importance. By storing data within India, we will enhance national cyber security, ensuring that Indian data remains within the country’s borders. The data center in Visakhapatnam will link to 12 countries through subsea cables, thereby increasing India’s global internet bandwidth and improving data transfer speeds.

In alignment with India’s climate objectives, Google plans to utilize cutting-edge cooling technologies and focus on renewable energy, investing ₹20,000 crore in green power initiatives. These sustainability efforts are in line with the government’s wider commitment to responsible and balanced development as part of the Viksit Bharat framework.

Transforming Visakhapatnam into India’s digital capital

Through this initiative, Visakhapatnam is set to emerge as India’s Digital Capital, a center where innovation converges with infrastructure, technology aligns with talent and growth harmonizes with sustainability. The city’s transformation from an industrial hub to an AI-driven leader exemplifies the essence of ‘Viksit Bharat’, a contemporary India that excels in knowledge, innovation and digital prowess.

The government of Andhra Pradesh sees the data center as a cornerstone of contemporary economic infrastructure, driving progress in AI, 5G, cloud computing and IoT platforms, while enhancing related sectors such as fiber optics, telecommunications and energy. Google’s partner company Raiden is set to receive state incentives totaling ₹22,000 crore, facilitating long-term partnerships and significant investments in the area.

A new digital dawn for India

As Artificial Intelligence transforms the global economy, Google’s establishment in Visakhapatnam signifies a pivotal moment in India’s technological evolution. This project will not only generate employment and draw investments but also elevate India to a position of global leadership in AI and cloud computing.

With sustainable development at its foundation, the Visakhapatnam AI hub embodies the true spirit of a Viksit Bharat, a nation progressing confidently towards a future characterized by technology, innovation and inclusive growth.
