The Mission for Advancement in High-Impact Areas, Medical Technology (Maha MedTech) has been officially launched by the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Gates Foundation. The initiative aims to fast-track the development of indigenous medical devices and solutions, reducing the country’s reliance on expensive imports while making healthcare technologies more affordable and accessible across India.

The mission is designed to stimulate innovation by providing milestone-based financial support to a wide spectrum of participants, including academic institutions, R&D centres, startups, MSMEs, and established MedTech companies. Funding for selected projects ranges from Rs 5 crore to Rs 25 crore, with exceptional cases potentially receiving up to Rs 50 crore.

Maha MedTech targets strengthening India’s capacity to develop, manufacture, and deploy cutting-edge medical devices, fostering collaboration between industry and academia. The scope of the mission spans diagnostic tools, implants, assistive devices, surgical equipment, consumables, and software-based medical solutions, with a focus on innovations addressing critical national health priorities such as tuberculosis, cancer, neonatal care, and primary healthcare.

Among the priority sectors identified are advanced imaging, robotics, minimally invasive surgery, and molecular diagnostics, positioning India as a future hub for high-end medical technology.

To complement financial assistance, the mission offers technical and regulatory support through dedicated programs such as:

Patent Mitra- to safeguard intellectual property
MedTech Mitra- to provide guidance on regulatory compliance
National Clinical Trial Network- to validate innovations and generate evidence

Participants will also benefit from mentorship by experienced industry professionals, guiding projects from concept to market-ready products.

The application process for the mission has already begun with the concept note submission window, which is open from September 15 to November 7, 2025, via the ANRF portal. Shortlisted concept notes will be invited to submit full proposals, with submissions opening in December 2025.

The mission is a critical step towards self-reliance in healthcare technology, potentially positioning India as a global player in the MedTech space while delivering advanced medical solutions to communities nationwide.
