Raipur: In another incident underscoring the grave threat posed by Maoists to civilians of remote areas dominated by the ultras, cadres of the unlawful group have executed two ordinary civilians in Chhattisgarh insurgency-hit Bijapur district.

The tragic development unfolded on October 24, when members of the proscribed group barged into the Nelakanker village under the jurisdiction of Usur police station limits and executed two of the villagers after branding them as informers of the police.

The deceased villagers have been identified as Tirupathi Sodhi [38] and Ravi [25] Pottam, both residents of Nelakanker of Basaguda area of Bijapur district. The slain duo were reported to be relatives.

As per details, the extremists executed both Ravi and Tirupathi by attacking them with sharp-edged weapons. . The killings have sent shockwaves into the region, leaving the locals panicked and terrified.

The development has been reported to the officials who have now ordered a probe into the incident. The matter is being investigated further.

Notably over two dozen civilians have so far been killed in separate incidents of targeted killing carried out by the members of the banned group in Chhattisgarh since January alone.

Theses killings have taken place amidst continuous campaign of security forces in areas infested by Maoists.

The operations launched by security forces have led to notable successes including neutralisation of top Naxal leaders and freeing up areas previously notorious as strongholds of Maoists.

Stringent security measures undertaken by the government in recent years have also resulted in mass surrender of Naxals including of their top commanders. As per the government, over 2100 Naxals have laid down arms before officials in the last 20-22 months.

In a notable development recently, over 200 hardcore Maoists have laid down their weapons, announcing their return to the mainstream before senior officials of the police in Chhattisgarh Bastar.

The surrender follows mass surrender of another group of around 60 cadres led by politburo member of CPI [Maoist] Mallojula Venugopal Rao alias Abhay alias Bhupati, before Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in Gadchiroli district bordering Abujhmad region of Chhattisgarh.

Announcing the news, Union Home Minister Amit Shah in a post informed that with surrender of 258 cadres, the notorious stronghold of Abujhmad and Uttar Bastar has become free from Naxals.

It is a matter of immense pleasure that Abujhmarh and North Bastar in Chhattisgarh that were once terror bases, have today been declared as free from Naxal terror.

Now a trace of Naxalism exists in South Bastar, which will be wiped out soon by our security forces.

Since January…

Significantly, only 11 districts stand affected by Maoist terror as compare to over 150 districts around a decade ago, as per a release by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Out of the 11 districts, only 3 are placed in the severely affected category. The Union Government has vowed to eliminate red terror from the country by March next year.
