Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi spoke over the phone with the father of the Odia medical student who was allegedly gang-raped in Durgapur, West Bengal. He expressed his deep condolences and solidarity with the victim’s family.

CM expresses deep sympathy and assures full support

During the conversation, the Chief Minister stated that he was “deeply pained and distressed” upon learning about the brutal incident and could empathize with the unimaginable anguish of a father in such a situation.

Majhi assured the victim’s father that both he personally and the entire Odisha Government stand firmly with the family during this tragic time. “As a father, I can feel your pain. Please be assured that the Odisha Government is with you and will extend all possible support,” the Chief Minister said.

He added that the State Government is closely monitoring developments in the case and will ensure that justice is delivered swiftly. A senior Odisha official has been assigned to maintain constant communication with the West Bengal Government to provide all necessary legal and administrative assistance.

Odisha police in coordination with West Bengal authorities

Chief Minister Majhi has directed the Balasore Superintendent of Police (SP) to remain in contact with Durgapur Police and offer every required assistance to the victim’s family. The Chief Minister emphasized the State Government’s commitment to ensuring the survivor’s speedy recovery and rehabilitation so that she can return to a normal life soon.

He further assured that any additional help required by the victim’s family will be promptly arranged. The victim’s father expressed gratitude for the Chief Minister’s concern, empathy, and prompt response, thanking him for standing by the family in their time of distress.

CM’s strong condemnation on social media

Earlier, in a social media post on X (formerly Twitter), Chief Minister Majhi strongly condemned the gang-rape incident, calling it “extremely shameful and painful.” Expressing deep anguish, he wrote that he was “deeply pained after hearing about the ordeal faced by the student.” He urged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to ensure exemplary punishment for the culprits and guarantee swift justice for the victim.

“I have directed senior officials to coordinate with the West Bengal Government and take necessary measures in this sensitive matter,” Majhi posted, adding that the Odisha Government will extend all possible assistance to the survivor and her family.

The Chief Minister also prayed for the survivor’s speedy recovery and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to ensuring the safety, dignity, and welfare of Odia students studying outside the state.

Victim’s father alleges negligence and threats in West Bengal

Meanwhile, the victim’s father, who hails from Jaleswar in Balasore district, alleged on Saturday that he is not receiving any cooperation from the hospital or local authorities in West Bengal.

Speaking to the media, he expressed frustration over the lack of communication, stating, “I am not getting any help from the hospital authorities. Even though there is a threat to my life, the West Bengal Government is remaining silent, despite this being a sensitive case”.

He further alleged that attempts are being made to divert attention from the incident and that only his brother has been assisting him in Durgapur. “Had the incident happened in Odisha, immediate action would have been taken”, he lamented.
