As the state of West Bengal is yet to recover from the horrific RG Kar Hospital rape case of 2024, another inhuman crime against woman has been unleashed from the state. A second-year student of a private medical college in Durgapur was allegedly dragged and raped in the premises of the college. The victim is said to be hailing from Jaleswar in Odisha and was pursuing her MBBS degree from the private medical college in Shobhapur, Durgapur which is located 170 kms away from the capital city of Kolkata.
The latest crime is another testament to the spiking rate of crimes against woman in the state of West Bengal ruled by the TMC government. As per the sources, the medical student stepped out of the campus around 8:30PM on October 10 along with a male friend. Apparently, a man dragged her to a hidden spot behind the hospital and raped her. The victim/survivor has been admitted to the hospital for the medical investigation.
How the crime unleashed as the campus was with least security
The father of the survivor reiterated that the response from the hospital/college administration has been very poor and there are no proper security arrangements in the campus to ensure the security of the female students. “When I reached there, my daughter was in a serious condition, and there was no response from the hospital administration”, the victim’s father said.
The survivor had gone out to eat the ‘puchka’ and she was called by her boyfriend Wasif Ali and insisted to meet her at the odd hour. However, when she reached the campus gate four to five people were present there. One among them raped her and took away her mobile phone. They abandoned her and left the place, explained the father of the survivor.
“This incident happened between 8 and 9 pm. The hostel was far away, and she had come here to eat. The security arrangements are not sufficient. Such a serious incident occurred, but no action has been taken. There is no system here, no response”, survivor’s father further added. He also demanded justice for the plight of his daughter who had enrolled her in the medical college with the dream of seeing her as an accomplished doctor.
The police have not revealed any official statement and said they are considering various angles to understand or decode the sequence of events. Police are also interrogating the staff of the medical college and other friends accompanied with the victim.
Spiking crimes against woman under the TMC government
The crimes against woman are drastically spiking in the state of West Bengal under the rule of Mamata Banerjee and her TMC government. The state is yet to recover and render justice to the horrific RG Kar hospital crime of 2024. Apparently, within a year another incident has shaken the country.
The West Bengal Doctors’ Front (WBDF) has strongly condemned the gang rape of the medical student and called it another “chilling reminder” that woman are not safe even on the medical college campuses of the state. In the month of July, a law student was gang raped inside the campus of the South Calcutta Law College.
West Bengal BJP has also asserted that the state suffers from severe crack and failure of the law and order. “This repeated failure of law and order exposes a disturbing pattern under Mamata Banerjee’s administration. The West Bengal Police must ensure a transparent and impartial investigation, unlike the RG Kar MCH case, which the Kolkata Police mishandled under instructions, so that the guilty face the harshest punishment under the law”, BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya wrote on the X social media platform.
