Telangana: Eggs thrown at Goddess Durga murthi in Hyderababad; pattern of targeting Hindu festivals to dominate streets

Two years ago, in the same Akberbagh area, eggs were thrown at the Sri Ramanavami procession. It is suspected that this is part of a deliberate pattern to dominate the streets and prevent any kind of Hindu activity in the locality. Owing to such invisible harassment, local Hindus are silently vacating these areas, either by selling their homes or avoiding renting them out, a serious problem that remains palpable

Hyderabad : Communal tension flared in Hyderabad’s Malakpet locality on October 4 night after eggs and tomatoes were allegedly hurled by Muslim miscreants at a Durga Devi murthi during the Visarjan procession, sparking outrage among Hindu devotees and raising serious questions about religious intolerance in the Old City.

According to eyewitnesses, the Durga procession was proceeding peacefully near RKT Homes, Akberbagh, when objects were suddenly thrown from nearby buildings, striking the idol of the Goddess. The incident, captured in videos widely shared online, was condemned by devotees as a deliberate act to insult Hindu sentiments and disrupt religious harmony.

“We were performing the visarjan with devotion when eggs and tomatoes came flying from above. It was clearly a planned act to provoke and disrespect our belief,” said one of the devotees at the scene.

Police teams rushed to the spot, preventing escalation. An FIR has been filed under Sections 299, 196, 353 r/w 3(5) of the BNS. Officials confirmed that they are reviewing CCTV footage to identify the perpetrators.

Speaking to Organiser, locals said that five years ago, similar incidents had occurred — including objections to setting up a pandal for Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. At that time, the Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsava Samiti and local Hindus had extended their support.

It is suspected that this is part of a deliberate pattern to dominate the streets and prevent any kind of Hindu activity in the locality. Owing to such invisible harassment, local Hindus are silently vacating these areas, either by selling their homes or avoiding renting them out, a serious problem that remains palpable.

A similar incident occurred during Ganesh Visarjan in the Paltan area of Malakpet two years ago, when eggs were thrown at the procession. Although a police complaint was filed, the case was dismissed on the grounds that the miscreants were “mentally unstable and unsound.”

This time, police assured residents that they would check the CCTV footage and take action against the culprits within 24 hours. However, no update has been given to the complainants so far regarding the progress of the case.

On Sunday night, AIMIM MLA Ahmed Bin Abdullah Balala, along with the local corporator, visited the area, yet, police again failed to communicate any details to the complainants.

Pattern of Religious Intolerance in Hyderabad’s Old City

The attack has brought to light a disturbing trend of rising intolerance among certain sections of the Muslim community in Hyderabad’s Old City, where objections against Hindu festivals such as Ganesh Chaturthi, Batukamma, and now Vijayadashami have become frequent.

Recently, Muslim residents filed complaints with police against playing devotional songs at Vinayaka mandaps, despite official permission. When Hindu residents questioned why the five-times-a-day Azaan and high-decibel Friday sermons over mosque loudspeakers should not also be regulated, the objections suddenly ceased — exposing the hypocrisy behind selective complaints.

Locals assert that such incidents are part of a larger propaganda against non-Muslim festivals, aimed at suppressing Hindu cultural expression while exploiting religious tolerance and a pattern of targeting Hindu festivals to dominate streets.

“Muslims happily set up stalls during our festivals, selling flowers, fruits, and garlands at inflated prices, but are the first to object when we play bhajans or hold processions. This double standard is unacceptable,” said a resident from the area.

AIMIM’s Silence Raises Questions

Critics have accused the AIMIM leadership Owaisi brothers of maintaining silence, refusing to condemn repeated attacks on Hindu festivals in their strongholds. This silence, locals allege, encourages radical behaviour and reflects a dangerous demographic and ideological shift underway in Hyderabad.

Similar incidents of stone-pelting during Ram Navami and Hanuman Jayanti processions have been reported across India, reinforcing fears that radical elements are systematically undermining Hindu religious freedoms under the guise of secular harmony.

However, Hindu organisations, accusing the Congress-led Telangana government of turning a blind eye to repeated provocations.

Observers note that the pattern of targeting Hindu religious processions, from Ganesh immersion to Durga mata celebrations, indicate a coordinated narrative of intolerance.
