For the first time in over three decades, Srinagar, the summer capital of J&K, came alive with the grandeur and fervour of Dussehra. On October 2, thousands of Kashmiri Hindus, alongside Hindus and people from other communities, gathered at the Sher-e-Kashmir cricket stadium to celebrate Vijayadashami, marking the victory of good over evil. The event symbolised a historic revival of cultural traditions in a region long disrupted by political turmoil.
The celebrations were marked by the ceremonial burning of giant effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakaran, and Meghnad at the practice grounds of the stadium. The towering effigies were engulfed in flames amidst thunderous cheers from over 5,000 attendees, who also enjoyed traditional music, bursting firecrackers, and sweets distributed across the venue. The atmosphere was electric, reflecting a rare moment of communal harmony and cultural pride.
Notably, the event saw participation from members of the Muslim community, including Peoples Democratic Party leader Iltija Mufti, who came to witness the festivities, underscoring the festival’s spirit of inclusivity and unity.
The Kashmiri Hindu Sangharsh Samiti, organisers of the event, expressed gratitude to the local administration and the residents for their support in making the celebration possible. Earlier in the day, a traditional ‘shobha yatra’ procession was carried out from a Mandir in Indira Nagar to the Dussehra venue, reviving a practice that had not been observed for 33 years.
Speaking to KNO, Rahul Matoo, a Kashmiri Hindu, reflected on the significance of the event: “Dussehra in Kashmir brings us together as a community and strengthens our bond with our heritage.” Other local residents echoed the sentiment, highlighting the festival’s role in reinforcing shared traditions and fostering hope. A resident from Kheer Bhawani remarked, “Celebrating Dussehra reminds us of our roots and shared traditions. It’s a moment of hope and togetherness.”
The celebrations culminated with a dazzling display of fireworks lighting up the Srinagar sky, further adding to the festive cheer. The administration ensured robust security arrangements throughout the event, guaranteeing safety for all attendees.
