Hamas accepts key terms of US Gaza peace plan; India backs efforts for hostage release & lasting peace in West Asia

Hamas has announced that it will accept certain conditions outlined in U.S. President Donald Trump’s peace plan for Gaza. The group stated that it is willing to allow the release of Israeli hostages and supports a transfer of power in Gaza. These measures are central proposals aimed at ending the ongoing war in the region. In response to Hamas’s partial acceptance, President Trump addressed the matter on his social media platform, Truth Social, expressing optimism that Hamas is ready for a lasting peace and urging Israel to immediately halt its bombing campaign in Gaza.

“Based on the statement that Hamas has just issued, I believe they are ready for a lasting peace. Israel must immediately stop bombing Gaza. Only then can the hostages be returned quickly and safely. In the current situation, that is impossible. This is not just about Gaza; it concerns the peace of the entire Middle East,” Trump said. He emphasised that the decisive factor now rests on whether Israel will accept the proposal. “Everyone hopes that Israel will stop the war,” he added.

However, Trump did not elaborate on negotiations concerning other aspects of the peace plan beyond hostages and regime change. A full video response from the President regarding Hamas’s proposals is expected soon. A photograph circulated on social media by White House Press Secretary Carolyn Levitt shows Trump speaking from the Oval Office, reinforcing his commitment to the peace initiative. Hamas, however, maintains that discussions must encompass a broader set of conditions. The group issued its statement around 1:30 a.m. Indian Standard Time on Saturday, following Trump’s ultimatum that Hamas must accept the 20-point plan by 6 p.m. American time on Sunday. Trump had warned that serious consequences would follow if the agreement was not accepted.

Some Hamas leaders had previously indicated that they could not immediately comply with all conditions and requested additional time to study the proposals. Despite this, they have now agreed to the main proposals. “Hamas has been a brutal and violent threat in the Middle East for a long time. They have made people’s lives unbearable. The culmination of this was the massacre in Israel on October 7, 2023. Children, women, and the elderly were all killed. One way or another, we will establish peace in the Middle East. Release all the hostages, release the bodies,” Trump said.

The 20 points of Trump’s Gaza plan are as follows:

  1. Complete demilitarization of Gaza, creating a terror-free zone posing no threat to Israel
  2. Reconstruction of Gaza to benefit local residents.
  3. Immediate cessation of hostilities if both sides accept the plan, with Israeli forces gradually withdrawing.
  4. Israel to formally announce acceptance of the deal within 48 hours, and Hamas to release all living hostages as well as return the bodies of the deceased.
  5. Israel to release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners after the hostages are returned, while returning the bodies of deceased Palestinians.
  6. Amnesty for Hamas members who choose to reintegrate into peaceful life, including safe passage for those leaving Gaza to countries willing to accept them.
  7. Distribution of humanitarian aid to Gaza to commence once the agreement is implemented, with 600 trucks allowed daily.
  8. Aid to be distributed fairly and without interference from either side, under supervision of the UN and the Red Crescent.
  9. Temporary interim administration composed of Palestinian technocrats to govern Gaza, monitored by a new international administration led by the U.S. in consultation with Arab and European allies.
  10. An economic plan to rebuild Gaza, led by experts experienced in modern Middle Eastern city development, ensuring investment and employment.
  11. Establishment of a special economic zone with low tariffs and rates.
  12. No forced displacement of residents; those leaving may return, and Gaza residents will be encouraged to remain.
  13. Hamas will have no role in governance and cannot create new armed structures, including tunnels.
  14. Regional allies to provide security guarantees to ensure Hamas and other groups comply with commitments and pose no threat to Israel.
  15. Formation of a U.S.-led International Stabilization Force in cooperation with Arab and international organisations to train the Palestinian police and maintain internal security.
  16. Israel will not annex Gaza; IDF forces will gradually transfer authority to other security forces.
  17. If Hamas rejects or delays proposals, the plan will still proceed in terror-free zones, with the International Stabilization Force eventually handing control back to Israel.
  18. Implementation of a de-extremistisation plan in Gaza, including religious dialogue initiatives.
  19. Parallel to reconstruction, Palestinian Authority reforms will continue, alongside a credible roadmap toward establishing a Palestinian state.
  20. U.S.-facilitated dialogue to enable peaceful coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians.

The international community, including several Islamic nations, has supported Trump’s initiative. The peace plan emphasizes security, humanitarian relief, economic reconstruction, and long-term governance reforms.

India Backs Trump’s Gaza Peace Initiative

India has expressed strong support for these peace efforts. In a post on social media, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said: “We welcome President Trump’s leadership as peace efforts in Gaza make decisive progress. Indications of the release of hostages mark a significant step forward. India will continue to strongly support all efforts towards a durable and just peace.”

PM Modi’s statement reflects India’s commitment to backing international initiatives aimed at securing a peaceful resolution, providing humanitarian relief, and supporting reconstruction in Gaza. By publicly endorsing Trump’s plan, India has positioned itself as a proactive supporter of diplomatic efforts to end the conflict and foster stability in the region. As the situation develops, the focus now turns to whether Israel will accept the plan’s conditions. With international attention on the conflict and global leaders calling for a lasting resolution, the coming days are crucial for translating diplomatic efforts into a tangible ceasefire and relief for civilians.
