New Delhi: In a notable development, the Union Government on October sanctioned as many as 19 new Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) for Bihar. The announcement was made as part of the 57 new schools sanctioned by the government across the country.

The newly sanctioned KVs will be established across a total of 16 districts of the state, benefiting thousands of students. Among the 19 sanctioned schools for Bihar, 6 are aspirational schools which will be setup in Sitamarhi, Sheikhpura, Katihar, Purnea, Muzaffarpur and Gaya districts.

The others sanctioned schools will be established across various districts of the state, including Bhabhua, Madhepura, Patna, Arwal, Munger, Bhojpur, Bhagalpur, Nalanda, Darbhanga and Madhubani.

Praising the announcement, senior Janata Dal United leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Jha termed the announcement a significant step towards providing quality education to the new generation.

“I am confident that the opening of such large number of KVs after decades in Bihar will bring a major change in the field of education. The state government has already selected suitable lands for the establishment of these new KVs and sent the proposal to the Union Government. Therefore, the process of starting these schools will also be completed soon,” added the Bihar MP.

The statement noted that as exemplar schools for NEP 2020, for the first time, these 57 KVs have been sanctioned with Balvatikas, i.e. 3 years of foundational stage (pre-primary).

The Government of India approved the Scheme of KVs in November 1962 to provide educational facilities of uniform standard throughout the country to cater to the educational needs of wards of transferable and non-transferable employees of Union Government including Defence and Paramilitary forces.  Consequently, “Central Schools Organization” was started as a unit of the Ministry of Education of the Government of India.

It is to be noted that the government had also sanctioned as many as 85 KVs in December 2024. According to government, in the latest proposal, 17 states/Union Territories are being covered.  Among these 57 KVs, 20 are proposed to be opened in districts where no KV presently exists despite a significant number of Union Government employees. Furthermore, 14 KVs are proposed in Aspirational districts, 4 KVs in LWE districts and 5 KVs in NER/Hilly areas.

It is worth noting here that in pursuance of the National Education Policy [NEP] 2020, as many as 913 KVs have been designated as PM Shri schools, showcasing the implementation of NEP 2020.  The KVs are some of the most sought-after schools, due to their quality teaching, innovative pedagogy and up-to-date infrastructure.
