Andhra Pradesh: CPI demands TDP govt action over RDT funding blocked by FCRA action, despite NGO violations

Instead of questioning why RDT repeatedly flouted FCRA provisions, misused foreign funds, and engaged in financial opacity, the Communist Party has chosen to lobby for its continuation

In a letter dated September 16, 2025, CPI Andhra Pradesh State Secretary K. Ramakrishna demanded that Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu immediately intervene with the Centre to restore funds for the Rural Development Trust (RDT), an NGO operating in Anantapur. The CPI statement projected RDT as a victim of Central Government’s “hostile attitude” and urged the State to ensure its smooth functioning.

However, the facts tell a different story. RDT’s registration under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) was cancelled by the Ministry of Home Affairs after due legal process, following repeated and serious violations. The NGO, once portrayed as a welfare organisation, is now facing charges of failing to file mandatory financial records, leaking sensitive data to US entities, and allowing its director to act as both donor abroad and beneficiary in India, a clear violation of the law.

Instead of questioning why RDT repeatedly flouted FCRA provisions, misused foreign funds, and engaged in financial opacity, the Communist Party has chosen to lobby for its continuation. By doing so under the party’s letterhead, CPI is not only undermining the rule of law but also pressuring the TDP government to extend political favours to an NGO blacklisted for violations.

The contradiction is stark: while thousands of genuine voluntary groups across India follow the law, RDT lost its legal status precisely because it chose to operate outside the framework. Yet the CPI leadership seeks to glorify the organisation, demanding “immediate restoration of funds,” conveniently ignoring the legal violations that led to its downfall.

This brazen defence raises serious questions: Why are Communists so desperate to fight for a private NGO? Why should the state government interfere in a matter already settled by the MHA after due process? And most importantly — why should the people of Andhra Pradesh accept political pressure in favour of an organisation accused of financial misconduct?

RDT’s “agenda above service” has now become the agenda of the Communist Party itself. In championing an NGO with a track record of FCRA violations, the CPI has once again exposed its willingness to stand against law and national interest — all for the sake of ideological posturing.

It has been observed that RDT, through its NGO network and with the backing of certain TDP leaders, is exerting pressure on the Central Government to restore its FCRA licence, which was cancelled following complaints by LRPF over serious violations of law.
