Sushila Karki was sworn in as the interim Prime Minister of Nepal on September 13, in the aftermath of a massive and devastating Gen Z protest that led to the topple of the KP Sharma Oli government. Sushila Karki, the former Chief Justice of Nepal is the country’s maiden woman Prime Minister.
Soon after assuming the charges as the Prime Minister of Nepal, Sushila Karki in her maiden public comment, pledged to fight against corruption that is deep-rooted in the administrative system of Nepal. She also asserted that she will work to ensure good governance, efficient administration and economic equality in the country. She further mentioned that the government should work in the direction of fulfilling the aspirations of the Gen Z, that is realizing the goal of eradicating corruption, unemployment and other socio-economic hurdles.
Most importantly, Sushila Karki asserted that she or her team will not stay in power for more than six months. They will ensure to transfer the power and responsibility to an elected, legitimate parliamentary government and will demit the office. “We won’t stay here for more than six months in any situation. We will complete our responsibilities and pledge to hand over the responsibility to the next parliament and ministers. We won’t succeed without your support. My team and I are not here to taste power”, Sushila Karki exclaimed during a national address.

Meanwhile, she also promised to initiate an investigation into the acts of vandalism occured during the protests. She declared those who were killed in the violent protests as “martyrs” and announced a compensation of Rs. 10 lakh to each of their families. Ms. Sushila Karki also described the protests as the first-of-its-kind in Nepal and called for equality and accountability in the country. “The situation that I have come in, I have not wished to come here”, she further added.

Sushila Karki was appointed as the interim Prime Minister after an intense negotiation held between Army Chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel, President Ram Chandra Paudel and the representatives of the Gen Z movement. As of now the elections for the Nepal Parliament is scheduled for March 5, 2026.
Meanwhile, President Ram Chandra Paudel reiterated the appointment of Sushila Karki as a “peaceful solution found through a difficult process”. As per the official sources, in the violent Gen Z protests that erupted on September 8, nearly 70 people died and hundreds have been injured as an impact of the clashes erupted between the youth protestors and the security officials.
