What should have been a peaceful and devotional Ganesh visarjan in Biroda village turned violent after stone pelting erupted immediately following the recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa. Several Hindus were injured in the attack, and police have so far arrested seven accused while investigations are underway to nab others.

According to eyewitnesses and police sources, all Ganesh murtis in Biroda had been immersed earlier, but due to the lunar eclipse, one murti remained to be taken for visarjan on September 8. On September 7 evening, devotees had gathered in front of the pandal to recite the Hanuman Chalisa. As soon as the recitation concluded, a group of miscreants allegedly from the Muslim community began pelting stones. Panic spread instantly, and the procession turned into chaos as both sides clashed.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Ashutosh Bagri said that the sudden outbreak of violence left more than half a dozen people injured. “A conflict took place in Biroda. Police immediately reached the spot and controlled the situation. Seven of the accused were arrested, and an FIR has been registered. The injured have been given medical attention, and medico-legal cases are being processed,” he said.

SP Bagri also confirmed that the DVR of CCTV cameras installed near the pandal has been seized to identify more culprits. Heavy police deployment has been ordered to prevent further flare-ups. “Anyone found guilty on the basis of CCTV footage will face strict legal action,” he added.

BJP MLA from Burhanpur, Archana Chitnis, rushed to Lalbagh police station after receiving news of the violence. Condemning the stone pelting, she said: “In Burhanpur, we celebrate all festivals peacefully and usually no one has any problem with each other’s celebrations. Unfortunately, during Ganesh visarjan, stone pelting was carried out after the Hanuman Chalisa recitation, creating a tense situation in the village. A similar incident occurred here last year as well. The first principle of justice is strict punishment for the culprits. I demand that the police administration take the toughest action possible.”

The injured victims have been admitted to the district hospital, and their medico-legal reports will form part of the investigation. Police said they will continue to monitor the situation closely and will not spare those who instigated the attack.
