Kolkata: On September 5, a 20-year-old woman was raped by a Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker and his aide in the Haridevpur area of Kolkata.
The accused have been identified as Debangshu Biswas and Chandan Malik. According to reports, the victim was taken to a house by Malik under the pretext of attending a birthday party. She had known the accused for several months prior to the incident.
When she arrived at the house, the young woman found only Debangshu Biswas inside. Malik and Biswas then took turns to rape the victim.
“The woman’s birthday was on Friday. On that day, the accused Chandan and Debangshu took her to Debangshu’s flat, where they had a meal. When she wanted to leave, the accused prevented her from doing so, allegedly locked the door, and gang-raped her,” a police officer said.
On September 6, the victim lodged a complaint with the Haridevpur police. Since the incident, the two accused have been absconding. Authorities have reportedly launched a manhunt to apprehend them.
According to police, the two men are currently absconding, and a search operation is underway to locate them. It has also emerged that one of the accused, Debangshu Biswas, is a Trinamool Congress worker. Coincidentally, he also serves as a revenue inspector in the land reforms department of the Mamata-led West Bengal government.
The owner of the house where the horrific crime occurred stated that he had rented the ground floor of the building to TMC worker Debangshu Biswas. He mentioned that Biswas had introduced himself as a government employee and said he would be living there with his mother. The house owner visited the property on Saturday.
