Telangana: KCR suspends daughter Kavitha from BRS citing anti-party activities

The suspension comes only a day after MLC Kavitha held a press conferences accusing party leaders KCR son-in-law and former Irrigation Minister Harish Rao and Santosh Kumar of conspiring against her father in relation to the Kaleshwaram project. Kavitha claimed these leaders are responsible for dragging KCR’s name into corruption controversies surrounding the massive irrigation project, setting the stage for Congress to demand a CBI probe

In a dramatic turn, The Bharata Rashtra Samiti (BRS) has suspended its MLC and former MP K. Kavitha, daughter of party chief and ex-Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), following contentious public statements and internal strife that have rattled the party’s leadership.

On September 2, BRS president KCR approved the immediate suspension of Kavitha due to “recent behaviour and party-opposing activities” that were reportedly causing damage to the party. This move marks a sharp turn in Telangana’s political scene, as Kavitha has long been a prominent figure within BRS.

The suspension comes only a day after MLC Kavitha held a press conferences accusing party leaders KCR son-in-law and former Irrigation Minister Harish Rao and Santosh Kumar of conspiring against her father in relation to the Kaleshwaram project. Kavitha claimed these leaders are responsible for dragging KCR’s name into corruption controversies surrounding the massive irrigation project, setting the stage for Congress to demand a CBI probe.

On September 1, Telangana CM A. Revanth Reddy, declared that the investigation into alleged irregularities in the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project will be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The government formally presented a comprehensive 665-page report by the Judicial Commission, chaired by former Supreme Court judge Justice P.C. Ghose, during the Assembly session.

Despite her criticism of fellow BRS leaders, Kavitha steadfastly backed KCR’s integrity, describing the Kaleshwaram project as a “great asset” destined to be remembered for centuries.

Kavitha’s removal from the party follows her earlier legal troubles, including time spent in Tihar Jail connected to the Delhi liquor scam. Her expulsion marks her most significant political setback to date, especially given her foundational role in the party established by her father.
