As a pretext to the much anticipated high-stake summit between the US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, the Foreign Minister of Russia Sergey Lavrov has reiterated that Moscow’s stance is ‘clear and well-defined’.
Lavrov has already landed in Alaska for a high profile geopolitical summit between Trump and Putin. During an interview to the Rossiya 24, a state-owned Russian news channel, Mr. Lavrov refrained from anticipating the possible outcomes of the Trump-Putin summit. Instead he reiterated, “We do not predict anything in advance. We know that we have arguments. Our stance is clear and well-defined. We will present them”.
The statement of Sergey Lavrov reflects Moscow’s strategic firmness in dealing with the US over Ukraine or any other issues. Lavrov also said that a lot was done during US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff’s visit to Moscow and Kremlin hopes to continue those ‘useful conversations’ in the Trump-Putin summit.
The series of swift and drastic diplomatic engagements between Washington DC and Moscow since Trump assumed office in January 2025, has culminated in Alaska for a high-stake meeting between both the Presidents. However, since day one, Kremlin is firm on its demands with respect to ending the military confrontation with Ukraine.
Kremlin asserts that a permanent end to the Russia-Ukraine conflict is feasible only if,
- Russia-Ukraine border is completely demilitarized
- Kiev fully forgoes the NATO membership
- Zero NATO presence in Ukraine even in future
- Recognition of Russia annexed regions-Crimea, Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporozhye as Russian territories. Infact, referendums were held in these regions in 2014(for Crimea) and 2022 to decide the fate of these territories.
Will Trump conceal to these demands presented by Kremlin in exchange for some other favour by Russia or how will the negotiations table turn is yet to be seen as Ukraine and Zelensky particularly awaits for a verdict regarding Kiev’s future course.
Meanwhile, in a totally unrelated geopolitical gesture, US President Trump has threatened to impose additional tariffs and sanctions on India if the talks at Alaska between himself and Putin fail. This can be a strategic stunt by the US administration to pressurize Russia, by targeting its strategic partner India.
Amid all the geopolitical chaos and unpredictability, countdown begins for the much anticipated Trump-Putin meet. What it will hold for both the nations, Ukraine and for the rest of the world has to be seen and deciphered. Most importantly, it is a litmus test for President Trump to prove his capabilities as a ‘peacemaker’ and as a beacon for ending the endless wars, which he always proclaims about!
