“Grabbing land, misleading tribal, disrupting national security”: PM announces demographic mission against infiltration

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a high-powered “Demographic Mission” to tackle illegal infiltration, warning of a “well-planned conspiracy” to alter India’s population makeup. Addressing the nation from the Red Fort, he vowed to protect citizens’ rights, livelihoods, and security

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a strongly worded Independence Day address, announced the launch of a nationwide Demographic Mission to safeguard India from the “grave dangers” of illegal infiltration. Speaking from the Red Fort, the PM cautioned that infiltrators were engaged in a deliberate conspiracy to alter the country’s demography, threatening livelihoods, security, and social harmony.

“I would like to alert the nation about a concern, a challenge,” PM Modi said. “Under a well-thought-out conspiracy, the country’s demography is being changed, and seeds of a new crisis are being sown. These infiltrators are snatching the livelihood of the youth of my country. They are targeting our sisters and daughters. They are misleading the adivasis and grabbing their lands. This will not be tolerated.”

The Prime Minister added that illegal immigration is no longer just a law-and-order issue but a direct threat to national security, particularly in border regions.

“Demographic changes in border areas pose a threat to national security. It sows the seeds of conflict. No country can surrender before infiltrators. Then how can we? Not to allow such activities is our duty to our ancestors who gifted us an Independent India. So I announce from the ramparts of Red Fort that we have decided to start a high-powered Demography Mission. This mission will tackle the danger that is looming over India,” he said.

The announcement comes amid intensified verification drives by authorities across multiple cities to identify and deport illegal immigrants, particularly those from Bangladesh living under false identities.

The issue has triggered political tensions, especially with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, whose Trinamool Congress (TMC) has accused the Centre of targeting Bengali-speaking Indians under the guise of an anti-Bangladeshi crackdown.

The controversy deepened earlier this year when the Delhi Police referred to a seized document as being “written in Bangladeshi,” sparking an unlikely language dispute.

“Such dangerous narratives must be condemned and resisted at every level,” the TMC said in a statement.

In response, the BJP rejected these allegations. Party media cell chief Amit Malviya hit back sharply: “To claim otherwise, and call on Bengalis to rise against the Centre, is deeply irresponsible. Mamata Banerjee should be held accountable… under the National Security Act.”

By making the announcement on Independence Day, PM Modi sent a direct political message to both citizens and opposition leaders, particularly in border states like West Bengal and Assam, that national security will take precedence over regional political concerns.

The Demographic Mission, as outlined, is expected to involve enhanced border surveillance, strict identity verification measures, and targeted operations to prevent land encroachment and unlawful settlement by infiltrators. While the government has not yet released the mission’s operational blueprint, announcements suggest it will integrate efforts from the Ministry of Home Affairs, intelligence agencies, and state administrations.
