Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort on the occasion of India’s 79th Independence Day, used his 12th consecutive address to celebrate the centenary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He hailed the organisation’s century-long service to the nation, calling it a monumental chapter in India’s history.

“Our clear view is: This nation is not built merely by forming governments… it is built through the dedicated efforts of millions upon millions of people, sages and seers, scientists, teachers, farmers, youth, soldiers, workers, the efforts of each and every one. It is shaped by individuals as well as institutions,” PM Modi said.

With evident pride, he continued, “Today, with great pride, I wish to mention something significant. A hundred years ago, an organisation was born, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. One hundred years of service to the nation is a most glorious and golden chapter. Guided by the resolve of nation-building through character-building, and with the aim of serving Mother India, more than a million swayamsevaks have dedicated their lives to the welfare of the motherland over these hundred years.”

He praised the RSS’s organisational ethos, adding, “Service, dedication, organisation, and unmatched discipline have been its hallmarks. In one sense, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh is the world’s largest NGO. Its history is one of a century of selfless commitment.”

Modi paid homage to swayamsevaks: “Today, from the ramparts of the Red Fort, I respectfully remember all the swayamsevaks who have contributed to this hundred-year-long journey of service to the nation. The country takes pride in this grand, devoted century-long journey of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, and it will continue to inspire us.”

Prime Minister concluded his remarks on the RSS with a succinct tribute: “Thousands of volunteers, a service organisation built on discipline. A hundred-year history of commitment. A tribute to the RSS. The nation takes pride. RSS, an inspiration.”

While Modi’s words echoed in New Delhi, in Bhubaneswar, RSS sarsanghachalak Dr Mohan Bhagwat delivered his Independence Day address, underlining Bharat’s moral and spiritual responsibility to the world.

“Bharat is a unique country. It strives to bring peace and happiness to the world and to share its Dharma with others. The reason we became independent was to ensure that everyone in our country could attain happiness, courage, security, peace, and respect,” Dr Bhagwat said.

He pointed to global instability and moral crisis: “Today, the world is faltering. Despite many experiments over 2000 years, solutions to its problems have not yet been found. It is our duty to provide the world with a solution and create a new world filled with happiness and peace based on our vision, rooted in religious principles.”
