More disturbing details have emerged in the tragic suicide of a 23-year-old TTC student and Christian girl, driven to take her own life after being trapped in a brutal case of love jihad. The young woman, who dreamt of becoming a teacher, ended her life by hanging herself before completing her studies, accusing her lover Ramiz of fanaticism, betrayal, and relentless pressure to convert to Islam. Their relationship began when they were classmates in the B.A. Malayalam course at Aluva UC College in Ernakulam district. A bright student, she waited for Ramiz, who had failed his Bachelor’s, for a year, tutoring him until he passed, before she joined TTC.

Ramiz’s Mother a Christian, Father a Muslim: Family history of interfaith marriage

The arrested Ramiz was known for keeping his distance from most people in his neighbourhood in Panayikulam. His father Rahim and mother Sherry, originally a Christian, had married for love and moved from their ancestral home in Paravur to Panayikulam in Ernakulam district two decades ago. Rahim is a meat and poultry trader, while Ramiz once ran a beef stall in Panayikulam that he started two years ago but later shut down, leaving him unemployed. He is said to be close only to younger relatives. Ramiz has a history of misconduct, with two drunk driving cases registered at Binanipuram police station, in addition to an earlier immoral trafficking case. Rahim operates three meat shops in and around Panayikulam, one located next to their old house. The family recently purchased a new house near the godown at Millupadi bus stop. Notably, two years ago, police seized ganja from one of their shops in Panayikulam. Ramiz also has a married sister, and the family is financially well-off.

Second tragedy in victim’s family in three months as brother links suicide to conversion plot

The suicide marks the second tragedy for the victim’s family in just three months. On May 12, her father was found dead in Kururthotti, Kothamangalam in Ernakulam district, leaving her devastated. Her mother works as a maid in a house in Kothamangalam, where her elder brother is employed as a driver. The brother has told police he will give a full statement about everything he knows regarding his sister’s death, alleging that she was physically and mentally tortured, and that Ramiz’s family’s sole aim was to convert her to Islam. He suspects more of Ramiz’s relatives were involved. The victim was discovered hanging inside her home two days ago. Her arrest followed the recovery of her suicide note, which accused Ramiz of forcing her to convert to Islam in order to marry him. When she refused, she wrote, he took her to his house and brutally beat her.

Friends confirm abuse as Ramiz and family accused of week-long threats and forced conversion

Friends have corroborated her ordeal. Her close friend Johnsy revealed that the young woman had proof of Ramiz’s involvement with another woman. Johnsy said Ramiz had pressured her to convert and had prepared all arrangements for a registered marriage. However, when they went to Adimali to register, he backed out at the last minute. Ramiz took her to his home last Sunday, but once there, his demeanour shifted drastically. She told friends that he locked her in a room and assaulted her, with his family joining in the pressure to convert. Ramiz told her that conversion was a precondition for marriage. She confided to her friend that she was told not to inform her brother. Under the false promise of a registered marriage, he brought her to Panayikulam, only to again demand conversion. When she refused, police say he savagely beat her in the presence of both his parents.

Police investigations reveal that Ramiz had been threatening her over the phone for an entire week after she returned home, repeatedly demanding her conversion. Investigators have seized chats and call records between them. In her suicide note, she wrote that Ramiz had beaten her and forced her to convert in front of his parents, and that she could no longer live as a burden after her father’s death. “Everyone has brought me to death. I am going to my father,” she wrote before ending her life on Saturday evening.

BJP plans protest as special police team to probe Ramiz and parents in love jihad case

BJP state vice president Shaun George visited the victim’s home yesterday, announcing that the party will hold a protest march at the Kothamangalam police station in Ernakulam district this evening, demanding strict action. He accused the Chief Minister of wilfully ignoring repeated incidents of love jihad and vowed that the BJP would pursue the matter seriously. Police have formed a special ten-member investigation team led by the Muvattupuzha DySP, including inspectors from Kothamangalam and Kuttampuzha. The parents of the arrested Ramiz will also be interrogated.
