West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee using old fear-mongering tactic ahead of polls: Assam CM Himanta Biswaon NRC

Guwahati: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on August 7 said that it is an old practice of West Bengal CM Mamta Banerjee to create fear amongst the Bengali community ahead of every election. He accused his West Bengal counterparts of applying the same fear technique ahead of the 2026 assembly election in the name of NRC. Replying to a question put by reporters in a late evening press meet in Dispur, CM Sarma dismissed the speculative remark of Banerjee on National Register of Citizenship (NRC). CM Sarma said, “Who asked her to obey the NRC? Suddenly she is saying that she will not obey the NRC? Who asked her to obey it? From where the topic NRC arose? Is anybody talking about it? Then where is the NRC and nobody has ordered NRC now.”

The Assam CM again said, this is her old tactic to create fear among the Bengali people ahead of the election. For the last 5 years she didn’t talk about NRC and suddenly when the election was approaching in the next year she started talking about these things.

CM Sarma’s reaction came after his West Bengal counterparts said that the SIR practice conducted by Election Commission in Bihar is a conspiracy to bring down the NRC.

No notice on Hindu Bengali by state government

CM Sarma also cleared that misinformation has been spread by some groups on the issue of Assam government’s order regarding cases in Foreigners Tribunal on Hindu Bengali people of the state. He said, “ The state government has not issued any special directive to drop cases pending in Foreigners Tribunals against non-Muslims entering India before 31st December 2014.” He said, the Citizenship (amendment) Act itself protects them from any punitive action, so there is no need for the state government to issue any directives except what has been already there in the CAA.

It should be mentioned that left eco systems are spreading false information about a state government directive to all District Collectors (DC) to drop about 65 thousands cases pending against non-Muslims in the foreigners tribunals across the state. But the CM has cleared that no such directive has been issued by the state government as of now.
