A day after the sensational allegation by CM Himanta Biswa Sarma that Bangladeshi Muslims are doing Love and Land Jihad in Assam, a shocking case of love jihad came to light, which has jolted the state. This time, the Love Jihadi is none other than a constable in the Assam police. The incident shows how the trust of the public in ‘Khaki’ can be arbitrarily breached and abused.

A young Hindu girl from the Chaygaon area of Kamrup district came to Guwahati with a lot of dreams of a bright future, but fell prey to love jihad and almost ruined her life. She was living in a rented house in the city and was enticed and eloped by an Assam police constable, Abdul Basid, until she was rescued by the police. Accused constable Rashid was working as a PSO of the officer in charge of another city police station.

As per the report, the family of the victim lodged a police complaint after her unnoticed absence from the Chandmari police station. Initially, it looked like a normal love affair and elopement to escape from the family. But investigation revealed that the incident is a much bigger conspiracy committed by a police personal. Police investigation found that Constable Abdul Basid pretended to be a Hindu man by misrepresenting his actual identity. Adopting a Hindu name and identity, Abdul established a long-term love relationship with the victim. He hid all his essential details, marital status and religious identity. The girl who blindly trusts Abdul for his new identity and police service never knew the truth behind the fake love. Police sources said that Abdul is a married man and a father of a young daughter, a fact he intentionally kept in the dark from the victim. The victim girl, without the knowledge of the true identity and intention of the love jihadi, was in a true relationship with Basid. Taking advantage of her belief, he convinced her to elope with him without the knowledge of her family. On Monday night, the accused Basid was arrested by Chandmari police, and the victim was rescued. Basid exploited the victims with his fake identity and was planning a bigger crime. The case is an eye-opener for many in society as to how crime like love jihad has run in the vein of some Muslims, even if he is in a responsible position to maintain law and order. If a serving Muslim police constable pretends to be a Hindu man and traps a Hindu girl with his fake identity, who will save Hindu daughters from this demon called Love Jihad. It is high time for society to rethink it and for the lawmakers to make a strict law against the menace.
