TMC MLA Savitri Mitra sparks row: Defends Terrorists after Pahalgam attack, whitewashes Jihad for vote bank politics

TMC MLA Savitri Mitra has ignited nationwide outrage by defending terrorists after the Pahalgam massacre, claiming they “respect tourists” even as 26 individuals including Hindus were killed

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Savitri Mitra from Manikchak, Malda has come under intense fire for what critics are calling an open justification of terrorism and a vile display of Hindu hatred. Amid nationwide mourning over the brutal Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 innocent lives, including civilians and off-duty soldiers, Mitra made an astonishing claim that “terrorists never harm tourists” and “always respect tourists.”

This shocking comment came as India reeled from one of the deadliest attacks in recent years, allegedly perpetrated by Pakistani-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba. Instead of expressing solidarity with the victims or condemning jihadist brutality, Mitra chose to rationalise the motives of terrorists, sparking outrage across the country.

BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya slammed Mitra’s remarks as a disgrace to the victims and a blatant attempt to whitewash terrorism. “Instead of standing with the nation, she is standing with those who slaughter our people. Is this the official stance of Mamata Banerjee’s TMC to sympathize with terrorists? This is not just shameful. It is anti-national,” Malviya stated.

EXTREMELY SHOCKING STATEMENT

Critics argue that Mitra’s statements signal a dangerous normalization of terror by political leaders for the sake of appeasement politics. “India will never forgive those who speak in favour of terrorists,” said a senior BJP leader.

This isn’t the first time Savitri Mitra has been in the eye of a communal storm. At a TMC Martyrs’ Day preparatory meeting on July 3 in Malda, Mitra made deeply polarising remarks, claiming that “Muslims don’t do politics on religion, only Hindus do.” She added, “We like Islam the most. Muslims don’t protest. But Hindus are doing politics over religion.”

Her disdain for Hindu sentiments did not end there. She took a direct swipe at the BJP and Hindutva, saying, “BJP seeks votes in the name of Ram. If we can say Jai Shri Ram, why can’t we say Jai Jagannath? Are Ram and Jagannath different?” She continued, “We don’t teach Bhagavad Gita anywhere. But there is a system for Muslims to learn Arabic and read the Quran. BJP will not get votes in the name of Hindutva.”

These remarks were perceived as blatant religious appeasement and sparked massive backlash from across the Hindu community. BJP leaders accused Mitra and the TMC of perpetuating “institutionalised Hindu hatred” under the guise of secularism.

TMC: A Party “Of Muslims”?

In a stunning confession during a media interaction, when asked about the BJP’s criticism of her statements, Mitra retorted, “BJP says Trinamool is a party of Muslims. We are Muslims. And BJP is a party of Hindus.” Her words effectively confirmed the opposition’s long-standing accusation of TMC being a minority appeasement-centric party, abandoning even the pretense of secular balance.

BJP West Bengal posted a scathing rebuttal on X, stating, “Openly mocking Sanatan Dharma, belittling the Gita, and pandering to vote-bank politics — this is the real face of TMC. This isn’t just an insult to Hindus. It’s a direct attack on our culture, our traditions, and our identity. TMC will pay the price for this in the 2026 assembly elections.”

"Our favourite religion is Islam. Muslims don’t protest. But Hindus are doing politics over religion. Nowhere are we taught the Bhagavad Gita, but Muslims have provisions to learn Arabic and study the Quran."

South Malda BJP General Secretary Amlan Bhaduri also condemned the TMC MLA, saying, “TMC leaders are repeatedly insulting Hindus in an attempt to appease the minorities. This dangerous narrative is fuelling communal divisions in West Bengal.”
