Clashes during Muharram procession in Bihar: Stone pelting on temple in Katihar, ASI stabbed in Darbhanga

Internet services have been put on hold for the next 24 hours in Katihar town in view of the tension that erupted on Sunday

Patna: Clashes broke out during Muharram procession at separate places of Bihar, prompting authorities to step in and place strict measures to control the situation.

Separate incidents of stone pelting and brawl reported from Bihar’s Katihar, Darbhanga, Samastipur, Gopalganj Bhagalpur and Saran district.

Clashes between two communities erupted in Bihar’s Katihar district during Muharram procession on July 6 afternoon, leaving a few people injured. According to media reports, rioters during the procession launched an attack on the locals along pelting stones on a temple in Naya Tola area under Town police station limits.

The incident occurred when the procession was passing near the Mahaveer temple on Sunday, where rioters started hurling stones on locals. The said temple’s premise was also targeted allegedly during the brawl, sparking an outrage. The rioters also vandalized vehicles and pelted stones on a few houses in the locality, prompting response from the other side.

An alleged video of the incident is also doing rounds on the social media where a group of rioters could be seen hurling stones and brandishing wooden sticks and other weapons.

Acting on swiftly, the administration controlled the evolving situation by deploying heavy numbers of security personnel on the spot . Senior officials of the police and political representatives too rushed to the spot and took stock of the situation.

Internet services have also been reportedly put on hold for the next 24 hours in Katihar town in view of the prevailing situation. Meanwhile efforts are being made to identify and arrest the rioters involved in the brawl.

ASI attacked during Muharram procession in Darbhanga

In another incident, a police official was attacked allegedly during a Muharram procession in Khajasarai area of Darbhanga district. The incident took place under the jurisdiction of Lehariasarai police station on July 5 evening.

The accused Mohammad Rabbani stabbed ASI Amit Kumar following a verbal spat over placement of barricades on road during a Muharram procession, leaving the official injured. Rabbani was later taken into custody by the police.

Rabbani’s arrest however sparked an outrage with an enraged mob jamming the Darbhanga- Baheri road, demanding his release. The mob allegedly resorted to stone pelting on police after which the administration cleared the blockade.

Shop vandalized in Samastipur

In another incident reported from Samastipur, a group of anti-social elements with the procession forcibly barged into a shop in the Marwari bazar area under the jurisdiction of town police station. According to reports, 5-7 rioters allegedly attacked a Pooja Samagri shop with sticks and threw the shop’s items on road.

According to an official, the incident involved a few anti-social elements who attacked the shop due to an old personal grudge and the matter is being investigated further.

In a separate incident, clashes broke out between two Akharas over performing stunts during Muharram procession in Bihar’s Gopalganj district. The incident occurred in Manjha area of Gopalganj, leaving one person injured.

A similar incident was also reported from Bihar’s Saran district, where members of two Akharas got involved in a scuffle while carrying out processions in Manjhi area on July 6, leaving two persons injured. Meanwhile as many as 8 people were injured in a scuffle broke between two groups in Bhagalpur district on Sunday.
