A tense situation unfolded in Magam, Kashmir, when a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) was reportedly assaulted by a mob of Islamists participating in a Muharram procession on July 4. According to eyewitnesses, trouble began when police officials attempted to remove flags and banners associated with Hezbollah, the Iran-backed terror organisation.

Islamists in the procession allegedly shouted provocative slogans, including “Pehchaan Hamari Hezbollah” (Our identity is Hezbollah), while some pasted a poster of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah on the wall of a local police station. Videos circulating on social media appear to show a large group of men surrounding and physically attacking the DSP.

Security forces were deployed to disperse the crowd and prevent further escalation. As of now, authorities have not issued an official statement detailing the nature of any injuries sustained by police personnel or clarifying whether any arrests have been made.

The incident has triggered widespread concern over the public display of support for Hezbollah, a designated terror group, in the region. An official investigation is underway to identify those involved in the assault and the organisers of the procession.

The assault sparked sharp reactions on social media.

Paksh For Bharat expressed outrage, posting: “They openly support Hezbollah in Kashmir and assault the police. Imagine the outrage if this had happened anywhere else. Dangerous appeasement of radical elements must end.”

Srinivas echoed similar concerns, writing:

“This is not normal. Kashmir is the only place where a terror group’s flags are carried openly, and police are attacked when they try to stop it. Dangerous precedent.”

With security now heightened across sensitive zones, officials have urged restraint and warned against any attempts to further inflame tension.
