‘From import-dependent to export powerhouse’: India now exports toys to 153 countries, says Piyush Goyal

India’s toy industry has undergone a dramatic transformation from being import-reliant to becoming a global exporter, with toys now reaching 153 countries. Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, highlighted this shift while addressing the 16th Toy Biz International B2B Expo 2025 in New Delhi on June 4.

Speaking at the event, the Minister declared: “Our toy industry, which was once heavily dependent on imports, is now exporting to 153 countries. This is a matter of pride and a symbol of how far we have come with the right policy support.”

He attributed this success to the consistent push for quality standards, the development of domestic manufacturing clusters, and the introduction of the Quality Control Order (QCO). “QCO has made India a quality-conscious country. Our manufacturers are now meeting global benchmarks,” he asserted.

Goyal emphasised India’s inherent advantage as a manufacturing hub owing to its large domestic market. “With a population of 1.4 billion, we have a huge captive market that allows us to scale up manufacturing, reduce costs, and become globally competitive,” he said.

He further urged industry stakeholders to capitalise on this momentum by focusing on product design, branding, and packaging. “If we strengthen these three pillars, Indian toys can dominate global markets,” he said.

Drawing a broader comparison, Goyal linked the toy sector’s rise to the larger national growth narrative. “When Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the ‘Vocal for Local’ campaign, many doubted its impact. Today, under the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, our belief that ‘Local can go Global’ is proving true,” he said.

He noted the role of government schemes in nurturing grassroots innovation. “Startups with creative toy concepts are receiving support through the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana, which now offers collateral-free loans for up to 20 years,” the Minister stated.

Goyal also shared that 18 toy manufacturing clusters have been supported by the Ministry of MSME to strengthen local production. To further accelerate this progress, the government is planning a new promotional scheme aimed at enhancing design capabilities, quality manufacturing, packaging standards, and branding.

“With our continued focus on innovation, quality, and global competitiveness, I am confident that India’s toy industry will emerge as a major player in the international arena,” Goyal concluded
