Patna: Launching a sharp attack on Purnea MP (Member of Parliament) Pappu Yadav, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and MP Sanjay Jaiswal on July 4 said that the former become a legislator from Purnea on mercy of Tejashwi Yadav only.

“Pappu Yadav has always become an MLA by looting ballot papers from booths… He won from Purnea because of Tejashwi Yadav’s mercy,” said the BJP legislator.

He added that Tejashwi Yadav deliberately fielded a candidate to divert votes and hinted people to vote for Pappu Yadav.

“Tejaswi Yadav deliberately made a girl from a backwards community contest the election to divert votes, and asked people of all communities to vote for Pappu Yadav,” he said.

Sharing his views on the ongoing row over the voter list revision drive being carried out by the Election -Commission of India (ECI), Jaiswal said that only 70-80 lakh people have to verify themselves to become eligible to vote.

“As far as voter inspection is concerned, around 7-7.5 crore people do not need to show their documents whose parents’ or grandparents’ names are in the voter list… Only 70-80 lakhs of people have to show their documents. The Supreme Court has said that the Aadhaar card is not mandatory for all purposes. Do you want the Election Commission to go against the Supreme Court?” he said.

Jaiswal also attacked the opposition leaders over opposing the ECI drive and added that only those who have already accepted defeat in the upcoming state assembly polls are making hue and cry over commission’s electoral revision drive.

He questioned that was there any scam happened during revision drive conducted in the year 2003? “if scams didn’t occur during voter inspection under the biggest fraudster, Lalu Yadav, then why do they think any scam will happen now?” says BJP MP Sanjay Jaiswal.

Earlier Purnea MP, Pappu Yadav made an appeal to boycott the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) drive being carried out by the ECI.

Taking to X, Yadav said “it is a request to common people of Bihar, youth, Dalits, extremely backward and all society that do not allow BLO and any election worker to enter your village. If someone come forcibly offer him tea, water and send him away but do not provide him any documents or details. Let’s see how they do the drama of voter review. Civil disobedience, complete boycott”.

It is to be noted that the ECI is carrying out a special electoral revision drive in Bihar ahead of the assembly polls. The Commission’s attempt to overhaul the voter list ahead of the state assembly polls however has sparked a major political row in the state with opposition parties expressing concerns.

The ECI however has clarified that the drive is being carried out smoothly and under constitutional provisions to ensure that no eligible voter is being left out from the voter list and to remove ineligible voters at the same time.
