On the sidelines of the massive Murugan Bhaktargal Aanmeega Maanadu held in Madurai on June 22, 2024, Organiser Weekly caught up with Shri Vannirajan, Dakshina Kshetra Sanghchalak of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Here are the key points he shared with us about the significance, planning, and message of this historic gathering
A Cultural Reawakening
Despite being culturally rich, Tamil Nadu has come under the heavy influence of divisive and anti-Hindu forces, which have been systematically attempting to disconnect society from its roots for several decades. Though, undermining Hindu customs, temples, and traditions is ultimately an impossible task, these forces have intensified their efforts in recent years — particularly targeting sacred sites and institutions.
Attempts to Islamise the sacred hills of the Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple by falsely declaring it as Waqf property, along with a series of Hinduphobic acts — such as the diversion of temple funds, public statements about eradicating Sanatan Dharma, restrictions on temple festivals, and the arbitrary declaration of personal and temple lands as Waqf — clearly reflect a confrontational approach towards Hindus. Against this backdrop, the Murugan Bhaktargal Maanadu attended by lakhs of devotees stands as a vital response — a cultural and spiritual assertion aimed at reviving Sajjan Shakti. It is poised to play a critical role in shaping the future of Tamil Nadu.
Ground-Level Connect, Not a Stage-Managed Show
He further added, “The Murugan Bhaktargal Maanadu evolved precisely to meet that expectation — to awaken cultural confidence and Dharma-rooted awareness among the common man.”
Although Hindu Munnani has been organising such conferences every five years, this year’s focus on Lord Murugan held special significance. Murugan is not only a revered deity but also a cultural icon deeply rooted in Tamil identity. By centring the event around Murugan, the organisers effectively bridged the spiritual and cultural dimensions, allowing people to reconnect with their heritage on their own terms.
This became all the more relevant in the current climate, where the ruling DMK Government has been persistently targeting Sanatan Dharma — both through inflammatory speeches and through actions on the ground.
“This was not a typical event with grand speeches and symbolic gestures. This was a movement grounded in grassroots participation — a platform where people from all walks of life came to reconnect with their roots. The emphasis was on cultural and spiritual awakening.”
Led by Dharma, United in Purpose
Hindu Munnani took the lead in organising the event, with support from several Sangh-inspired organisations across the State. It was truly a coming together of like-minded forces, united by a shared vision. This meticulous execution was result of rigorous coordination between Sangh, VHP, RSS and several other organisations went for last three to four months to execute this event The gathering was spiritually elevated by the presence of numerous sadhus and sanyasis from different parts of Tamil Nadu. The ashirvachana (blessings) given by respected mathadipathis added depth and legitimacy to the occasion.”
Strictly Apolitical
“One of the foundational decisions we made was that there would be no display of political party symbols. This was adhered to strictly. The message was clear — this movement belongs to the people and their Dharma, not to any political banner. Except flags bearing Hindu Munnani, none were present either at the venue nor at any other connected with this event. “The entire programme began on time. Every speaker was respectfully given their due time. The discipline and seamless flow of the event reflected the maturity of the organisers and the participants.”
Family-Centric Cultural Atmosphere
We had invited the public to join with their families — and they came in large numbers. It was not just a conference but a family celebration of culture, heritage, and devotion.

“Cultural performances by devotional artists enriched the event between speeches. Their expressions were not merely artistic but devotional — a heartfelt tribute to Murugan and Bharat Mata. The collective chanting of Kanda Sashti Kavasam and the concluding harati set a deeply spiritual tone.”
