The transformation of Sarkot Village: A model development story after CM Pushkar Singh adopted it

Sarkot Village, nestled in the scenic yet often challenging terrain of Uttarakhand, is emerging as a beacon of rural transformation, thanks to a focused development initiative sparked by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami

Located at the Gairsain block of Chamoli district, the village of Sarkot has emerged as a glowing example of rural transformation in Uttarakhand. This change began when Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami adopted Sarkot under the Chief Minister Model Village Programme, with the goal of converting remote villages into self-reliant, sustainable, and modern rural settlements. This move is part of a wider state strategy and aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of developing ‘Adarsh Grams’ ideal villages that are empowered socially, economically, and culturally.

The plan gained recognition when the Chamoli district administration formally initiated Sarkot’s development as a CM Model Village. District Magistrate Sandip Tiwari ensured that every department from agriculture and horticulture to health, education, and infrastructure worked together in a coordinated manner. The aim was to not only enhance the village’s physical infrastructure but also strengthen its social and economic fabric by ensuring local livelihoods, reducing migration, and boosting community pride.

 AGRICULTURAL AND HORTICULTURAL REVOLUTION

One of the most visible signs of Sarkot’s transformation is in the field of agriculture. Today, not a single field lies fallow—a rare and remarkable achievement in many Himalayan villages. Farmers have switched from traditional subsistence farming to modern agricultural methods, including poly house cultivation which allows for vegetable production all year round. The result is better yields, improved income, and increased interest among the youth to pursue farming as a profession.

Another milestone in Sarkot’s development journey has been the adoption of mushroom farming—an ideal high-return activity in the hill region. Mushroom cultivation requires minimal land but offers significant income, making it suitable for small-scale farmers and women-led households.

Moreover, the village has ventured into food processing, a critical value-addition step in the agricultural chain. Villagers now process surplus produce—like fruits and grains—into packaged jams, juices, dried fruits, and flours, increasing both shelf-life and profitability. These initiatives have created local employment opportunities and minimized post-harvest losses.

In addition, Sarkot has experienced a boom in horticulture. Fruit-bearing trees such as apples, kiwis, plums, and pears have been planted across farmlands and common lands. These fruit orchards are expected to mature into profitable ventures in the coming years, offering sustainable returns and allowing farmers to diversify their incomes beyond grains and vegetables.

 LIVESTOCK AND DAIRY DEVELOPMENT

Alongside agricultural gains, Sarkot has made great success in livestock and dairy farming. Every household now owns at least one milch animal, and no cowshed is empty. With access to proper fodder, veterinary services, and training in animal husbandry, dairy farming has emerged as a stable source of daily income. Villagers now sell milk and dairy products locally, ensuring both nutritional security and financial support.

 INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT AND CONNECTIVITY

For any village to flourish, physical infrastructure is vital, and Sarkot has seen massive improvement on this front. A major development has been the construction of the Sarkot-Bhararisain motor road, which now connects the village to nearby markets and administrative centers. This road was also renamed in memory of Havildar Vasudev Singh, a local hero who died in the line of duty in Ladakha gesture that brought immense pride to the village.

Along with roads, basic services such as drinking water, sanitation, electricity, and housing have been upgraded under the model village initiative. The development of internal village roads, drains, solar street lighting, and clean water facilities has made life significantly easier for residents.

 WOMEN EMPOWERMENT AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Empowering women has been one of the core objectives of the Sarkot model. During his visit, Chief Minister Dhami handed over a cheque of ₹1 lakh to the Sarkot Mahila Mangal Dal for cultural activities and purchasing packaging machines. These tools allow women to process and package local goods for sale, improving both incomes and entrepreneurial skills.

Self-help groups (SHGs) have been strengthened, enabling women to actively participate in economic activities and local governance. Whether through small businesses, dairy units, or skill-based training, women in Sarkot are now leading the village’s growth story.

 CULTURAL PRESERVATION AND TOURISM DEVELOPMENT

Even as Sarkot progresses economically, it has stayed true to its cultural roots. During his visit, CM Pushkar Singh Dhami participated in the village’s traditional Jhumelo dance and visited the revered Kot Bhairav Temple. Such involvement has helped reinforce the village’s cultural identity while also boosting local morale.

Sarkot’s pristine location, vibrant cultural traditions, and upgraded amenities are now attracting visitors. Rural tourism is gaining ground, with homestays, cultural performances, and nature trails offering potential sources of income to the villagers.

CLEANLINESS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION

Sarkot stands out for its emphasis on cleanliness and hygiene. The village is kept free from visible garbage, and waste is managed through community efforts. Sanitation infrastructure has been improved with proper drainage, toilets, and cleanliness drives.

Environmental consciousness is also strong tree plantations, water conservation projects, and the use of eco-friendly practices have been encouraged. Sarkot’s approach is a model of development that does not compromise on ecology.

Sarkot’s makeover is not just functional it is also aesthetic and symbolic. Every house in the village has been painted in a coordinated color scheme: yellow walls for prosperity, blue doors for vastness, red borders for strength, and traditional Aipan art on the exteriors representing cultural pride. This unified visual identity reflects the spirit of unity and collective progress.

 ECONOMIC IMPACT AND LIVELIHOOD ENHANCEMENT

The cumulative result of these efforts has been a significant improvement in the village’s economy. Income levels have risen due to multiple sources farming, dairy, food processing, and tourism. By adopting modern methods and value-addition techniques, villagers now get better returns for their produce. This diversification has ensured that households are no longer dependent on a single livelihood source.

One of the most powerful outcomes of Sarkot’s transformation has been the prevention of migration a major issue in Uttarakhand’s hill regions. Not a single house in the village is locked due to migration, a powerful indicator of the village’s revival. Young people are being trained in agriculture, hospitality, packaging, and tourism-related skills, enabling them to contribute productively to the local economy.

 HEALTHCARE AND EDUCATION IMPROVEMENTS

While specific upgrades to healthcare and education have not been detailed in the media, it is understood that improved roads, government schemes, and the model village framework include steps toward better schools, health centers, and digital learning opportunities. These improvements are critical to long-term development and are likely part of the district administration’s comprehensive approach.

GOVERNMENT SUPPORT AND COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION

The success of Sarkot would not have been possible without strong political will and administrative coordination. Under CM Dhami’s leadership, the model village scheme was executed with precision. The district administration brought all departments together, ensured convergence of schemes, and continuously monitored progress. Sarkot’s story has now inspired other officers and even NRIs to adopt and develop more villages under similar models.

Sarkot’s success is not just due to funding and schemes it owes much to its people’s participation. The villagers have shown tremendous unity, taking ownership of the development projects and working collectively to implement changes. The integration of traditional wisdom with modern practices, and the preservation of community harmony, has helped create a holistic development model.

CONCLUSION

Sarkot’s development is not just a one-time success—it offers a replicable model for other villages in Uttarakhand and across India. Its success shows that rural development can be inclusive, eco-friendly, culturally rooted, and economically sustainable. With continued community engagement, government support, and flexible adaptation to local needs, Sarkot is well-positioned to continue thriving and inspire other regions to follow its path.

The transformation of Sarkot village under Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s leadership is a shining example of what is possible when government vision, administrative coordination, and community participation come together. From barren fields to productive orchards, from locked homes to vibrant households, from isolation to tourism—Sarkot has become a living, breathing model of rural development in the hills of Uttarakhand. This success story is not just about infrastructure or economics it is about restoring faith in the future of rural India, one village at a time.
