Tamil Nadu: 5 Lakh devotees to attend Hindu Munnani’s Murugan Conference in Madurai on June 22; Yogi Adityanath invited

We expect over five lakh participants from across the State. We are making every effort to make this a grand success. Thiruparankundram is the first of the six abodes of Lord Muruga, and we are aware of ongoing efforts to rename this sacred hill as ‘Sikhandar Hill’ by certain groups

The Hindu Munnani has announced that a grand Murugan Devotees Conference will be held in Madurai on June 22, 2025, marking a significant moment for devotees and defenders of Sanatana Dharma across Tamil Nadu and beyond.

Following successful protests to reclaim Thiruparankundram from what it described as “Islamisation by fundamentalist elements in collusion with the ruling DMK,” and after a prolonged legal battle to secure permission for the event, Hindu Munnani has resolved to organise a Murugan (Skanda) Devotees Conference in Madurai.

According to Hindu Munnani State President Kadeswara Subramaniam and R. Thangapandi, media in-charge of the event, “The conference aims to highlight the needs of Murugan devotees to the State government, particularly concerning the road from Karaikudi to Palani.” Hindu Munnani has already begun preparations and is organising local committees to ensure large-scale participation.

Invitations Extended to Yogi Adityanath

The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, has been officially invited to participate in the Murugan Devotees Conference. The invitation was extended by K. Bhaktan, the South Bharat Organiser of Hindu Munnani.

Bhoomi Puja Performed at Conference Venue

On May 28, a Bhoomi Puja was performed with the blessings of spiritual elders at Amma Grounds in Madurai, the site where the massive Murugan Devotees Conference is scheduled to take place. A ceremonial pole was also installed to mark the occasion.

Hindu Munnani General Secretary M. Muruganandham, speaking at a preparatory meeting held on April 26, in Madurai, said the stretch of road from Karaikudi to Palani should be upgraded to a five-way route to facilitate devotees undertaking the ‘padayatra’ pilgrimage. He added that the conference will also press for a separate road to Tiruchendur for devotees to use during Vaikasi Visakam and other festivals. He urged devotees to participate in the Madurai conference en masse.

Thangapandi further stated, “Over one lakh devotees attending the conference will sing the Skanda Sashti Kavasam as a choir. We plan to distribute exact replicas of the temple towers of the six abodes of Lord Muruga, along with sacred ash (vibhuti) from these temples as prasadam. There will also be an audio-visual presentation showcasing the biopics of 108 servitors of Lord Murugan. The exhibition will open to the public ten days prior to the June 22 conference.”

He reiterated the importance of addressing the devotees’ concerns to the State government, especially about the road from Karaikudi to Palani. He noted that a petition has been filed against the conference, alleging it is political and could stir religious tensions.

Kadeswara Subramaniam said, “We expect over five lakh participants from across the State. We are making every effort to make this a grand success. Thiruparankundram is the first of the six abodes of Lord Muruga, and we are aware of ongoing efforts to rename this sacred hill as ‘Sikhandar Hill’ by certain groups. The second abode is facing erosion and risks disappearing without urgent intervention. At the third abode, Palani, the government has banned the distribution of annadhanam to pilgrims on foot (padayatris). These issues deeply concern Murugan devotees across Tamil Nadu.”

He added, “The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister extends greetings on the festivals of other religions but has never wished Hindus on their festivals. Why can’t the government greet the people on Thai Poosam, the festival of Lord Murugan? In this context, to protect Sanatana Dharma, temples, and our culture, we are compelled to convene this gathering of devotees not just from Tamil Nadu but from across the world. We have decided to visit homes across the State to explain the objective behind the conference and invite people to participate in this important event.”

Hindu Munnani has made a public appeal through social media for mass participation. In one Facebook post, it stated:

“Dear Tamilagam Hindu Brothers and Sisters, BJP and other Parivar organisations have planned a massive Lord Murugan Devotees Meeting at Madurai on June 22, 2025. We wish for your participation and cooperation in this event. An invitation will be distributed door to door by BJPians and our Parivar karyakartas very soon. Come on, Hindu folks! Let us make this event very grand and a huge success.

Opposition to the Conference

Meanwhile, Makkal Kalai Illakiya Kazhagam submitted a petition to Collector M.S. Sangeetha on April 21, urging authorities not to grant permission for the Murugan conference. Its State Coordinator, P. Ramalingam, alleged that Hindutva organisations—including the BJP—had politicised the Tirupparankundram issue, and that the upcoming conference was intended to provoke animosity towards minority religions.

Despite court orders, Ramalingam accused Hindutva organisations of inflaming religious sentiments to gain political mileage. He called upon the Tamil Nadu government to deny permission for the conference and stop publicity campaigns through notices and songs.
