In an event symbolising the strides in regional connectivity and women’s empowerment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated two pivotal airports in Madhya Pradesh, Satna and Datia, on May 31, 2025. This inauguration was more than just the launch of two airports; it was a soaring symbol of inclusive development and the fulfilment of dreams for many who had never imagined taking to the skies.
On the auspicious occasion of the 300th birth anniversary of Punyashloka Devi Ahilyabai Holkar, Prime Minister Modi connected virtually from Bhopal, extending a message of unity and progress. The event was made even more memorable as seven tribal women from Satna district were given the honour of taking the first flight from Satna to Rewa, while in Datia, seven women passengers took their maiden flight to Khajuraho. These journeys epitomised the essence of ‘From Hawai Chappal to Hawai Yatra,’ highlighting how even those in slippers were now travelling in aeroplanes.
The first flights from both Satna and Datia were notably piloted by female captains, further underscoring the message of women’s empowerment and breaking barriers in the skies. The excitement of the tribal women was palpable as they stepped onto the aircraft. Overwhelmed with emotion, the tribal women boarded the planes after reverently touching the aircraft doors, a tradition for new beginnings, capturing their awe and gratitude for this extraordinary feat, a moment capturing both their reverence and disbelief at this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
From the sky, they marvelled at the sweeping views of the city below, their eyes wide with wonder. The seven women who flew included Chhoti Bai Kol from Kaima village, Booti Kol from Kothi, Sangeeta Kol from Satna, Sumitra Adivasi from Rampur Baghelan, Ritu Kol from Maihar, Bhuri Kol from Satna, and Maina Devi Kol from Madhavgarh. For these women, the flight was more than a journey; it was a moment that redefined their aspirations and reaffirmed their faith in the power of progress.
“I never thought I would ever board an airplane,” said Chhoti Kol, a former Janpad member from Kaima Kothar. “My son told me about this opportunity just a day before, and now here I am, flying in a plane I had never even seen up close.” Another woman said that the promise of air travel for those who wear Hawai chappals had finally been fulfilled, and they had Prime Minister Modi to thank for making this dreamlike experience a reality.
Ritu Kol from Maihar said, “I never even dreamed that an ordinary woman like me could ever travel in an airplane. We used to feel happy just watching planes fly overhead from our courtyard, but today, the Prime Minister has given even helpless people like us the chance to fly. This is a huge thing.”
A New Gateway to Vindhya
Established by the Airports Authority of India at a cost of Rs 36.96 crore, Satna Airport has a 1,200-meter runway and a terminal building with the capacity to serve 50 peak-hour passengers a day, and the annual capacity of 2.5 lakh passengers. Satna Airport will act as a regional centre in north-eastern Madhya Pradesh, enhancing connectivity with important religious and industrial hubs such as Chitrakoot and Maihar. The environment-friendly development features contemporary amenities such as LED lighting, solar streetlights, and a water recycling system.
The inauguration ceremony also saw the launch of the ‘PM Shri Paryatan Air Service’ by the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board, inaugurating regular flights between Satna and key cities such as Bhopal, Indore, Singrauli, and Rewa. The flights, which will operate six days a week, are likely to boost regional tourism extensively, providing easier connectivity to famous places such as the ancient Bharhut Stupa and the Panna Tiger Reserve.
Better Connectivity in Bundelkhand
At the same time, the new Datia Airport was opened, constructed at a cost of Rs 60.63 crore and covering an area of 118 acres. The airport has a 768 square meter terminal with a capacity of 150 peak hour passengers and 2.5 lakh annual footfalls. With operational suitability for ATR-72 aircraft and a future possibility of handling A-320 aircraft, Datia Airport will become an improved connectivity hub to the ancient town famous for its spiritual heritage and architectural wonders.
Improvement in infrastructure consists of a recarpeted runway, apron bays, ATC tower, and fire station, along with sustainable features such as rainwater harvesting and energy-saving lighting systems. The operation of this airport is likely to provide massive economic and social dividends, ranging from employment opportunities to enhancing hospitality, retail, and healthcare industries in the area.
A Vision for Inclusive Development
Satna and Datia airport inaugurations are evidence of the government’s unshakeable commitment to developing India’s aviation infrastructure and taking development to the last mile in the country. With an increase in regional connectivity, these initiatives are likely to be a key contributor to the economic development of Bundelkhand and Baghelkhand.
Above all, they represent a vision of growth that is all-encompassing and leaves no one behind, spreading hope and opportunity to those who had only ever walked in slippers over dusty roads, now soaring high above the clouds. When the tribal women of Datia and Satna come home with hearts aglow and eyes shining, their tale is an insistent reminder that progress, determination, and the firm conviction that even the farthest hopes can soar on the wings of supportive care are within anyone’s reach.
