On May 27, 2025, the Department of Posts, under the Ministry of Communications, Government of India, unveiled two innovative digital platforms—‘Know Your DIGIPIN’ and ‘Know Your PIN Code’—marking a significant step toward modernising India’s addressing system and advancing the vision of Digital India.

These platforms, launched in alignment with the National Geospatial Policy 2022, aim to create a standardised, geo-coded, and interoperable addressing framework to facilitate precise location identification and enhance citizen-centric delivery of public and private services.

The Digital Postal Index Number (DIGIPIN) system, developed in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad, the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), introduces a grid-based addressing solution that assigns a unique 10-character alphanumeric code to every 4×4 meter unit across India.

Simultaneously, the ‘Know Your PIN Code’ portal upgrades the existing 6-digit PIN code system by integrating Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based geofencing to ensure accurate postal boundary demarcation. Both platforms are designed to improve last-mile connectivity, enhance emergency response capabilities, and foster innovation across sectors.

The Department of Posts has actively invited public feedback to refine these services, ensuring they meet the evolving needs of citizens and stakeholders.

India’s addressing system has historically faced challenges due to its unstructured and inconsistent formats, particularly in rural and remote areas where standardised addresses are often absent. Rapid urbanisation, frequent renaming of streets and localities, and the lack of precise location data have hindered efficient service delivery, including e-commerce, healthcare, and emergency response.

The traditional 6-digit PIN code system, introduced in 1972, while effective for its time, lacks the precision required for modern governance and digital ecosystems. The National Geospatial Policy 2022 addresses these gaps by promoting open access to geospatial data, fostering innovation, and aiming to establish India as a global leader in the geospatial sector.

Key objectives of the policy include developing a high-resolution topographical survey and mapping system by 2030, creating a Digital Elevation Model (DEM), and strengthening institutional frameworks for national and state-level coordination. The launch of ‘Know Your DIGIPIN’ and ‘Know Your PIN Code’ directly supports these goals by leveraging geospatial technology to create a robust, standardised addressing ecosystem that enhances governance, economic growth, and societal development.

The DIGIPIN system represents a revolutionary approach to addressing by introducing an open-source, interoperable, and geo-coded framework known as Address-as-a-Service (AaaS). By dividing India’s geography into 4×4 meter grids, each assigned a unique 10-character alphanumeric code based on longitude and latitude coordinates, DIGIPIN ensures precision and permanence in location identification.

Unlike traditional addresses, which may change due to renaming of streets or localities, DIGIPIN codes remain constant, making them ideal for unstructured or dynamic areas such as rural regions, forests, and oceans. Developed in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad, NRSC, and ISRO, the platform has been officially reviewed and adopted by the Thematic Working Group on Address under the National Geospatial Policy 2022. It is now available for integration into workflows across ministries, state governments, and private institutions.

The ‘Know Your DIGIPIN’ portal allows users to generate a unique code by entering precise coordinates or selecting a location on an interactive map, without storing personal information to ensure privacy. The open-source nature of DIGIPIN, with its technical documentation and source code available on GitHub, encourages developers to create innovative applications, further amplifying its impact across sectors like e-commerce, logistics, emergency services, and urban planning.

The ‘Know Your PIN Code’ portal modernises the legacy 6-digit PIN code system by incorporating GNSS-based geofencing to geo-reference all postal jurisdictions across India. This nationwide geofencing exercise has resulted in accurate boundary demarcation, published on the Open Government Data Platform under the title “All India PIN Code Boundary geo-json.” Users can access the portal to identify the correct PIN code for any location by inputting coordinates or selecting a point on a map. The platform also includes a feedback mechanism, allowing users to report inaccuracies and contribute to continuous improvement.

By making geo-fenced PIN code data publicly available, the Department of Posts promotes transparency and enables developers to create location-based applications. This modernisation effort ensures that the PIN code system remains relevant in a digital era, supporting efficient mail delivery and facilitating the growth of e-commerce and logistics operations. The combination of DIGIPIN’s precision and the upgraded PIN code system creates a complementary addressing framework that addresses both immediate and long-term needs of India’s diverse population.

The launch of these platforms aligns closely with the objectives of the National Geospatial Policy 2022, which seeks to liberalise access to geospatial data, foster innovation, and establish a vibrant geospatial ecosystem. By providing open-source access to DIGIPIN and geo-fenced PIN code data, the Department of Posts supports the policy’s goal of democratising geospatial information. The platforms enable data-driven decision-making, enhance coordination between national and state-level institutions, and promote collaboration between government, academia, and industry. The involvement of institutions like IIT Hyderabad and ISRO underscores the interdisciplinary approach to building a robust geospatial infrastructure. Furthermore, the policy’s vision of achieving a high-resolution topographical survey and Digital Elevation Model by 2030 is supported by the precise, grid-based addressing system introduced by DIGIPIN, which lays the foundation for advanced mapping and spatial analysis.

The potential impact of ‘Know Your DIGIPIN’ and ‘Know Your PIN Code’ is far-reaching, with benefits spanning multiple sectors. For citizens, these platforms ensure that public and private services, such as healthcare, e-commerce, and government schemes, can reach even the most remote areas with greater accuracy. In emergency response and disaster management, DIGIPIN’s precise location data reduces response times, enabling faster interventions by ambulances, fire services, and relief teams. The grid-based system ensures that unmapped or unstructured areas are digitally locatable, supporting disaster preparedness and recovery efforts.

Economically, the platforms drive innovation by enabling developers to create location-based applications, fostering growth in sectors like logistics, healthcare, and urban planning. The standardised addressing framework also supports e-commerce by improving last-mile delivery efficiency, reducing errors, and enhancing customer satisfaction. In governance, DIGIPIN and the upgraded PIN code system provide a reliable foundation for policy implementation, urban planning, and resource allocation, contributing to data-driven decision-making and precision governance.

The Department of Posts has emphasised public engagement by inviting active feedback on both platforms to ensure continuous improvement. Users can submit suggestions and report inaccuracies through the ‘Know Your DIGIPIN’ and ‘Know Your PIN Code’ portals, reflecting a commitment to participatory governance and user-centric design. This feedback mechanism ensures that the platforms evolve to meet the diverse needs of India’s population, from urban centers to remote villages.

As Vandita Kaul, Secretary of the Department of Posts, stated during the launch, “The launch of these two applications reflects our government’s unwavering commitment to digital transformation and precision governance. DIGIPIN, in particular, will redefine how we perceive addresses, ensuring that every citizen, even in the remotest part of the country, is digitally locatable and serviceable.” This statement underscores the transformative potential of these platforms in bridging geographical and digital divides.

In conclusion, the launch of ‘Know Your DIGIPIN’ and ‘Know Your PIN Code’ represents a landmark achievement in modernising India’s addressing system and advancing the objectives of the National Geospatial Policy 2022. By introducing a precise, interoperable, and open-source addressing framework, DIGIPIN addresses longstanding challenges in location identification, particularly in rural and unstructured areas. The ‘Know Your PIN Code’ portal enhances the legacy PIN code system, ensuring its relevance in a digital era. Together, these platforms empower citizens, streamline service delivery, and foster innovation across sectors.

With active public participation and ongoing refinements, they have the potential to redefine India’s geospatial landscape, positioning the country as a global leader in geospatial technology. The collaborative efforts of the Department of Posts, IIT Hyderabad, NRSC, and ISRO, combined with the open-source and participatory approach, ensure that these platforms will have a lasting impact on governance, economic growth, and societal development.
