Koraput: Police on May 29 apprehended a hardcore Maoist during a search operation in forests of Petguda of Koraput districts, said police in an official statement issued.

The operation was launched on the basis of credible intelligence regarding movement of Maoists in the forest area of Petguda village under the jurisdiction of Boiparaiguda police station limits on late Wednesday evening.

A gunfight broke out between the extremists and the police team in early hours of Thursday after the former opened fire upon the police team. In response the security personnel exercised control fire and subsequently launched a search operation after the stoppage of firing.

During the search, a hardcore Maoist identified as Kunjam Hidma alias Mohan was apprehended by the team. The rest of the extremists however managed to escape, taking advantage of the forests.
