Odisha Government plans anti-drone shield for Puri Temple and rehabilitation of 19 demolished mutts

In a strategic move to enhance security and preserve the spiritual sanctity of the world-famous Jagannath Temple in Puri, the Odisha government is preparing to deploy advanced anti-drone technology around the 12th-century shrine. Concurrently, it has initiated the rehabilitation of 19 religious mutts that were previously demolished as part of the Srimandir Parikrama Project under the former Naveen Patnaik Government.

The deployment of anti-drone systems is being considered to address growing concerns over aerial security threats in sensitive zones. The Law Department, in coordination with the Police Department, has begun discussions on installing this cutting-edge technology. Once operational, the system will be capable of detecting, disabling, and safely neutralising unauthorised drones operating over the temple complex.

Odisha Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan confirmed on May 23 that discussions are at an advanced stage, and a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) has already been prepared.

“If required, anti-drone technology will be utilised. We will urge the Odisha Police to expedite the process. The temple administration is prepared to provide the necessary funds to ensure the shrine’s security and sanctity,” said Minister Harichandan.

He added that the system would be designed to deactivate drones within a predefined radius, effectively safeguarding devotees and temple premises. With millions visiting the temple annually, this initiative is seen as a necessary step in light of the rising number of drone-related incidents across the country.

Security experts and devotees have praised the initiative, calling it a timely intervention to preserve the sanctum of one of India’s most revered temples.

In another significant development, the Odisha government has taken decisive action to address the concerns of devotees and heritage conservationists by announcing the rehabilitation of 19 mutts that were demolished during the implementation of the Srimandir Parikrama Project under the previous Naveen Patnaik Government.

Law Minister Harichandan stated that the process of relocating and reconstructing these mutts has already commenced. All 19 mutts will be relocated to a single designated area to facilitate easier access for pilgrims and maintain the cultural continuity of the sacred spaces.

“The process for the rehabilitation of the 19 mutts demolished due to the Srimandir Parikrama Project in Puri has already started. It has been decided that the mutts will be rehabilitated in one place to ensure convenience for devotees visiting these holy sites. The location has been identified, and it will be made encroachment-free soon,” said Minister Harichandan.
