A personal diary seized from the residence of Haryana-based YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra has become a focal point in an ongoing espionage investigation, raising serious questions about her alleged ties to Pakistani intelligence operatives. Malhotra, a 33-year-old travel vlogger who runs the YouTube channel Travel with JO, was arrested on May 16 in Hisar under charges of spying for Pakistan.

The diary, containing cryptic entries such as “Love you” and references to a person named Savita, has deepened the mystery surrounding her activities, as authorities probe her international travels and potential role in a broader espionage network.

The Arrest and Initial Findings

Jyoti Malhotra, a resident of Hisar’s New Aggarsain Extension, came under scrutiny following intelligence inputs about her frequent trips to Pakistan and her alleged communications with Pakistani intelligence operatives (PIOs). The National Investigation Agency (NIA), Intelligence Bureau (IB), and Haryana Police are jointly investigating the case, which has gained urgency in the wake of the April 22, 2025, terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that claimed 26 lives, including 25 tourists. Malhotra’s visit to Pahalgam in January 2025, just three months prior to the attack, has raised suspicions about possible reconnaissance activities.

The influencer, whose YouTube channel boasts over 377,000 subscribers and whose Instagram account had 133,000 followers before being suspended by Meta, is accused of sharing sensitive information with Pakistani handlers. Authorities allege she was being groomed as an “asset” by PIOs to gather intelligence and promote pro-Pakistan narratives through her social media platforms.

The Diary: Cryptic Entries and New Leads

During a search of Malhotra’s residence, Haryana Police recovered a diary that has provided critical insights into her activities. The diary, described as containing 10-11 pages of notes, includes entries written in both English and Hindi. One undated entry, written after a 10-day trip to Pakistan, reads: “Today, I have returned to my country, India, after a 10-day trip from Pakistan. During this time, I received a lot of love from the people of Pakistan. Our subscribers and friends also came to meet us. The two days we got to visit Lahore were not enough.” She described Pakistan as “crazy and colourful,” expressing a desire for easier access to religious sites like temples and gurdwaras for Indian visitors.

More intriguingly, the diary contains personal notes, including the phrases “Love you” and instructions such as, “Tell Savita to bring fruits. Take care of home. I will be back soon,” alongside mentions of medicines. Investigators are working to identify who Savita is and whether she is a family member, associate, or part of Malhotra’s alleged network. The intimate tone of the entries has led authorities to explore whether Malhotra was emotionally manipulated or “honey-trapped” by her Pakistani contacts, a tactic reportedly used by operatives to recruit assets.

Alleged Espionage Network and Pakistani Connections

According to Hisar Superintendent of Police Shashank Kumar Sawan, Malhotra was in regular contact with a Pakistani official, Ehsan-ur-Rahim (alias Danish), whom she met at the Pakistan High Commission in Delhi in 2023 while seeking a visa. Danish, expelled by India on May 13 for alleged espionage activities, reportedly introduced Malhotra to Ali Ahwan, who facilitated her meetings with Pakistani intelligence officials, including individuals identified as Shakir and Rana Shahbaz. To avoid detection, Malhotra saved Shakir’s contact as “Jatt Randhawa” in her phone. She maintained communication with these operatives via encrypted platforms like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Snapchat, allegedly sharing sensitive information.

Sawan revealed that Malhotra was part of a larger espionage network spanning Haryana and Punjab, involving agents, informants, and financial handlers. “They were developing her as an asset,” Sawan stated at a press conference. “She was in touch with other YouTube influencers, and they were also in touch with PIOs. She used to go to Pakistan, like on sponsored trips. She was in Pakistan before the Pahalgam attack, and the investigation is on to establish linkages, if there are any.” The police are also probing her connections with other influencers, including a Puri-based YouTuber, Priyanka Senapati, whom Malhotra met in September 2024.

International Travel and Financial Discrepancies

Malhotra’s extensive travel history has raised red flags. Since obtaining her passport in 2018, she has visited Pakistan multiple times, China once, and other countries including Bangladesh, Dubai, Thailand, Bhutan, Nepal, and Indonesia. Her trip to Pakistan in April 2023, under the guise of attending the Baisakhi festival, is under particular scrutiny, as is her planned visit to Bangladesh, evidenced by a recovered visa application. Authorities note that her known income as a mid-tier influencer does not align with the cost of her frequent international trips, suggesting possible external funding.

Her visit to Pahalgam in January 2025, where she filmed locations including Gulmarg, Dal Lake, Ladakh, and Pangong Lake, is being investigated for potential links to the terror attack. Videos she recorded near sensitive areas like Pathankot, Nathu La Pass, and regions close to Arunachal Pradesh have also drawn attention, with investigators examining whether they were made on instructions from her handlers.

Broader Crackdown and National Security Concerns

Malhotra’s arrest is part of a wider counter-espionage operation, with 14 individuals detained across Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh in the past two weeks. The crackdown intensified following the Pahalgam attack and India’s subsequent Operation Sindoor, which targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on May 7. Among those arrested are two individuals from Punjab’s Malerkotla, Guzala and Yameen Mohammad, accused of sharing sensitive information about Indian military installations with Pakistani operatives.

The case has sparked significant political and public debate. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has promised a thorough investigation, stating, “Strictest action will be taken if the charges are proven true.” Opposition leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda cautioned against premature judgments but emphasised accountability. Malhotra’s father, Haris Malhotra, has defended her, claiming her trips to Pakistan were legitimate and authorised.

Ongoing Investigation and Digital Evidence

Malhotra, currently in five-day police custody, is being interrogated by a joint team of NIA, IB, Haryana Police, and military intelligence. Her electronic devices, including her mobile phone and laptop, are undergoing forensic analysis to recover deleted chats and uncover the extent of her communications with Pakistani operatives.

Authorities are also examining her financial transactions to trace potential foreign funding.

The investigation has highlighted the evolving nature of espionage, with Sawan noting, “This is modern warfare that is not just fought on the borders. PIOs are trying to recruit social media influencers to push their narrative.”
