Imphal: A wave of grief swept through Yairipok Yambem village in Imphal East district as the sad news of the passing away of BSF Constable Deepak Chingakham reached home on May 11. The brave soldier lost his life in the line of duty during cross-border firing in J&K’s RS Pura sector during Operation Sindoor

The 23-year-old braveheart from Manipur was severely injured on May 10 when Pakistan resorted to unprovoked firing along the international border.  His family received the heartbreaking news the following day on May 11 when he succumbed to his injuries in hospital, plunging the entire village into mourning.

Deepak’s uncle, Chingakham Surjit Singh, described him as a bright and athletic young man who had joined the Border Security Force in 2021. “He was good at sports, full of life, and always determined to serve the nation. Though our hearts are broken, we are proud of his supreme sacrifice,” he said with emotion.

Neighbours and friends gathered at the family home to pay their respects, recounting memories of Deepak’s warmth and dedication. The village observed a moment of silence to pay homage to the brave martyr.

Tribute from N Biren Singh

Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the young soldier. In a heartfelt statement, he said,

“Deeply saddened by the martyrdom of BSF Braveheart Constable (GD) Deepak Chingakham, who sustained fatal injuries during cross-border firing from Pakistan in the RS Pura sector and laid down his life in the line of duty.
He was a proud son of Manipur, and as a Manipuri-Meitei, his courage and devotion to the nation reflect the unwavering commitment of our people to protect and serve.
We salute the armed forces for their relentless dedication and bravery. We stand with the family of Constable Deepak in this difficult time and will extend all possible support. His sacrifice will always be remembered with honour and pride.”

Constable Deepak’s mortal remains were given full honour in Jammu on May 12 by DG BSF, top officials of the paramilitary force, army and police officials. J&K Lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha also paid tribute to the BSF braveheart. His mortal remains will reach Imphal later today and will be laid to rest with full state honour. His bereaved family is waiting for the return of their brave son wrapped in tricolour in Imphal. Deepak’s sacrifice serves as a solemn reminder of the unflinching bravery of India’s armed forces, and the enduring spirit of Manipur’s sons who stand at the nation’s borders to safeguard its sovereignty.
