Pahalgam first, Tenkasi next”: Bomb hoax shakes Tamil Nadu’s Tenkasi collectorate

Amid ongoing Operation Sindhoor, in down south, threatening mails have been sent to the Tenkasi District Magistrate and BJP functionary Ananthan Ayyasamy. Leaving nothing to chance, police teams screened the collectorate, and it was found to be a hoax.

Following the bomb threat from an unknown person through an email, Tenkasi Police launched an investigation. The emails were sent to the District Collectorate and BJP district president Ayyaswamy Anandan on May 7. The email claimed that explosives had been planted inside the district collectorate. According to media reports, the email emanated from the address [email protected], addressed to ‘[email protected]’ and ‘[email protected]’. It referred to the recent Pahalgam terrorist attack and warned that a similar one would occur in Tenkasi. It mentioned that bombs had been planted within the collectorate complex and would detonate at 1 p.m. on May 7.

District Superintendent of Police S. Aravind directed the bomb detection squad and police personnel to carry out an intensive search at the collectorate and surrounding areas to ascertain if any bombs had been placed.

Sniffer dogs were pressed into service to detect whether any bombs or explosives were placed in any part of the office premises and surrounding areas. The bomb detection squad personnel thoroughly scanned the area for explosives, but it turned out to be a hoax.

Tenkasi district BJP president Ananthan Ayyasamy had also received a threatening email on May 7, 2025, from an unidentified sender using the alias “Dasara Udhayanidhi.” It also referenced recent political tensions and hinted at connections spanning from Pakistan’s ISI to Tamil Nadu’s political circles. The message said: “Pahalgam First, Tenkasi Next – Tenkasi is the actual Jugular Vein of India. 4 IEDs placed in Collector Office; evacuate all by 1 PM!” It was sent not only to Ayyasamy but also to the official email addresses of the Tenkasi Collector and a local startup hub.

The sender of the email had warned Ayyasamy to “stay out of Tamil Nadu politics,” referring to a supposed historical incident involving former CIA Director Allen Dulles and an 18-year-old Madras constable, tying it to Dravidian political developments.

BJP functionary Ananthan Ayyasamy took to his official X account to express concern, saying: “Received this threat email as #OperationSindooor happens! As much as I would want to see this email as joke, but can’t simply walk past – given the past history, especially the PFI, ISIS related NIA searches (Sept 2022, Feb 2023, Feb 2024) in Tenkasi Dt. Requested @CollrTenkasi @TenkasiPolice for their kind attention and necessary action.”

Tenkasi district police have registered a case and started an investigation to apprehend the sender of the email and determine his motive behind the message.

It should be noted that the threats through email followed National Investigation Agency (NIA) raids and arrests in the region linked to banned terror organisations. Tenkasi, carved out of Tirunelveli, is known for communal clashes and caste conflicts between upper and Scheduled Caste communities. In Tirunelveli, there are areas where Muslims outnumber Hindus and have a world of their own. Particularly, Melapalayam is a Muslim-majority town. It is the place where the NIA frequently conducts raids and arrests Muslims for supporting terror outfits, including banned PFI and ISIS. Police sources say, “PFI’s political arm, namely the SDPI, is active in Tirunelveli areas, causing sleepless nights to us.”
