The ban also covers specific advertisements, with the goal of fostering a spiritually harmonious atmosphere near the Ram Temple

In a significant move towards preserving the spiritual and cultural essence of Ayodhya, the Ayodhya Municipal Corporation (AMC) has unanimously passed a resolution banning the sale of liquor and meat along the entire 14-kilometer stretch of Ram Path. This resolution also extends to the display of advertisements deemed inappropriate for the religious character of the area.

Ram Path, a major route in Ayodhya that leads directly to the grand Ram Temple, is considered sacred by devotees of Bhagwan Ram. The new directive prohibits the operation of shops selling alcohol and meat within a 500-meter radius of this stretch, reinforcing the sanctity of the pilgrimage route. The decision applies to the entire route, including the sections that fall within the adjoining Faizabad area, bringing the full length under the purview of the restrictions.

Along with the prohibition on liquor and meat sales, the municipal body has also moved to ban the display of hoardings and billboards that promote products such as paan masala, gutkha, tobacco, cigarettes, and even undergarments items considered incongruent with the sacred setting of Ram Path. The intention behind this move is to cultivate a serene and respectful atmosphere for the millions of devotees who are expected to visit Ayodhya in the coming years, especially with the completion of the Ram Mandir.

The proposal was presented and passed during a recent session of the AMC’s executive committee, which includes the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and 12 elected corporators. Following the resolution, the municipal corporation has sent the proposal to the Ayodhya District Magistrate for further action and official enforcement.

Ayodhya Mayor Girish Pati Tripathi, while addressing the media, emphasized that this decision was made in view of Ayodhya’s status as a global spiritual center. “Ayodhya is not just a city; it is a symbol of India’s cultural and spiritual identity. Ram Path holds immense religious value, and it is our duty to protect its sanctity. The sale of non-vegetarian food and alcohol along such a sacred route is inappropriate and must be regulated,” he stated.

Tripathi further mentioned that the decision had received support from various religious leaders, local spiritual institutions, and many residents of Ayodhya who believe that this initiative will help preserve the city’s religious character. He also noted that similar measures are already in place in certain parts of the city near prominent temples and that the expansion of these restrictions was a long-standing demand from local devotees.

However, the resolution has also sparked concerns among certain sections of the business community. Some restaurant owners and shopkeepers who currently operate within the soon-to-be-restricted zone have raised apprehensions about the potential impact on their livelihoods. There are calls for the administration to provide relocation assistance or alternative business opportunities for affected vendors.

In response to these concerns, municipal officials have assured that a fair and phased implementation process will be followed. They are also exploring the possibility of identifying alternative commercial zones for the businesses that may be displaced as a result of this decision. Additionally, authorities are planning to carry out awareness campaigns to educate local traders and citizens about the importance of this resolution and the process that will be followed to implement it.

The AMC’s resolution aligns with the larger vision of transforming Ayodhya into a spiritually vibrant and culturally rich global pilgrimage destination. With the construction of the Ram Temple nearing completion, the city is witnessing a surge in tourism and spiritual activities. Infrastructure is being rapidly developed, and there is a concerted effort by both the state and local governments to create a cityscape that reflects Ayodhya’s mythological and religious heritage.

The ban on meat and liquor, along with the removal of certain types of advertising, is expected to reinforce this transformation. Many residents and pilgrims have welcomed the move, describing it as a necessary step to maintain the sanctity of Ram Path and promote a devotional atmosphere across the city.

Religious scholars and sants associated with Ayodhya’s temples have also lauded the decision, viewing it as a continuation of the values espoused by Bhagwan Ram. “Ram Rajya is not just about good governance; it is about dharma, culture, and values. Such steps are essential if we want to create a spiritually conscious society,” said a senior pujari from Hanumangarhi Temple.

The administration is now focusing on implementing the new guidelines. Surveillance and enforcement mechanisms are being planned, including regular inspections, issuance of notices, and penalties for violations. Officials have also hinted that similar guidelines may be extended to other prominent religious routes in Ayodhya in the future.
